Introduction
•One of the best ways to define a word found in
the Bible is to determine how the Bible uses the
word. In this lesson we will examine various
verses that use the word reprobate, and then
determine what the word means.
1.Jeremiah 6 is a prophecy of the coming destruction of
Jerusalem. Why would God want to destroy His holy city? What
is in the minds of His people? Did they know any shame?
Jeremiah 6:10, 13-15
•Jeremiah 6:10To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may
hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken:
behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no
delight in it.
•Jeremiah 6:13For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them
every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the
priest every one dealethfalsely.
•Jeremiah 6:14They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my
people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
•Jeremiah 6:15Were they ashamed when they had committed
abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush:
therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them
they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
2.These are the people that received the Ten Commandments and
ordinances. They practiced them for generations. Are the words
"We will not walk therein" and "We will not hearken" words of
rejection? Who is rejecting who? Are they first rejecting God?
Jeremiah 6:16, 17, 19
•Jeremiah 6:16Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and
see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk
therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We
will not walk therein.
•Jeremiah 6:17Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken
to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.
•Jeremiah 6:19Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this
people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not
hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
3.What was the occupation of "all" the people of Jerusalem?
Jeremiah 6:28
•Jeremiah 6:28They are all grievous revolters, walking with
slanders: they are brass and iron; they are all corrupters.
4.What word is used to describe God's people? Why are they
called by such a name? Is this word related to God's rejection?
That is to say, can someone who is rejected by God be called by
this word? Jeremiah 6:30
•Jeremiah 6:30Reprobate silver shall men call them, because
the LORD hath rejected them.
5.Who rejected God? Whom did God reject? Does God reject
those that reject Him? Is this the definition of a reprobate?
Jeremiah 6:19, 30
•Jeremiah 6:19Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this
people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not
hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
•Jeremiah 6:30Reprobate silver shall men call them, because
the LORD hath rejected them.
6.How is this same concept taught by Paul? Romans 1:28
•Romans 1:28And even as they did not like to retain God in
their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do
those things which are not convenient;
Note
If they did not "retain God in their knowledge," they must have
had that knowledge at one time, and then rejected it. And then
"God gave them over to a reprobate mind," and rejected them.
7.How did two infamous Egyptians know for certain that they
were contending with the true God? Does this make someone a
reprobate? Were there reprobates during Paul's life who resisted
the truth? Are there reprobates today doing the same? Exodus
7:1-13; 2 Timothy 3:8
•Exodus 7:1And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and
Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.
•Exodus 7:2Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto
Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land.
•Exodus 7:3And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the
land of Egypt.
•Exodus 7:4But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and
bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great
judgments.
•Exodus 7:5And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth mine hand
upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
•Exodus 7:6And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they.
•Exodus 7:7And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old,
when they spakeunto Pharaoh.
Question 7 ….Continued..
•Exodus 7:8And the LORD spakeunto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
•Exodus 7:9When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou
shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
•Exodus 7:10And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had
commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it
became a serpent.
•Exodus 7:11Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of
Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
•Exodus 7:12For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's
rod swallowed up their rods.
•Exodus 7:13And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the
LORD had said.
•2 Timothy 3:8Now as Jannesand Jambreswithstood Moses, so do these also resist the
truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
8.Is a reprobate always easy to identify? What disguise might
such a person be wearing? How can they be identified through
the disguise? What type of bad works? Any good works? Titus
1:16
•Titus 1:16They profess that they know God; but in works they
deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every
good work reprobate.
9.Now, an important question to ask ourselves? 2 Corinthians
13:5
•2 Corinthians 13:5Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the
faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how
that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Conclusion
•Based on the scriptures above, a reprobate is someone who
has consciously rejected God, and then is rejected by God.
There are atheists who actively proclaim that they do not
believe that there is a God, and they incessantly attempt to
persuade others to believe the same. These are rejected by
God, these are reprobate. There are others who lead various
lifestyles: criminal or licentious. They are simply overcome by
their desires, and therefore reject the only God who can save
them. These also are rejected by God: they are reprobate.
Hmm. Well :-We come to the End….
