Biman , the Bangladesh Airlines connects Dhaka with about 30 major cities of the world. She has the accommodation facilities available throughout the country. Sheraton, Radisson, west in and Pan pacific hotel chains are in operation in the capital city SWOT Analysis

Weaknesses Tourism sites are not properly explored, extracted and managed. Lack of investment. Low quality services. Lack of safety, security and hygiene. Lack of infrastructural development. Visa requirement and complex visa procedures. Absence of sales plan and public relation activities. Lack of private initiatives in tourism development. Bangladesh cannot offer tourist products and destination packages exclusively to local and foreign tourists. As a result, tourists have to go back to their home with low level of satisfaction.

The number of supply chain member in the tourism industry is not sufficient to build up a strong base. Small number of tour operators, inefficient national airlines, and insignificant role of travel agencies. Shortage of professional guides. Price of some tourism components like the star and standards hotel rooms, food items, package tours and river cruise programs are much higher than those of neighbouring countries like India and Nepal. Lacking of promotional and marketing activities of tourism by both public and private sector.

Bangladesh as not made any concerted effort in the past in its tourism potential. In the recent period, however, there has been some awareness development campaigns by both public and private sectors on the potential of tourism in the country. An early identification and declaration of tourism sites may set the momentum for tourism development in the country. Both investors and consumers would then be gradually motivated toward utilization of the potential benefits of the sector. Policy Gap in Tourism Development

Overcoming the Physical Planning Gaps in Tourism Development   Bangladesh has just started realizing that the country has an immense potential in tourism development in the future. The positive impact of tourism can be great in this respect to maintain a good balance between tourism and environment. The policy marks and physical planners involved in tourism planning must not forget this concern of sustainability in development. Current efforts in preparing Master Plan of cities and municipalities in the country may help development of tourism plans for resourceful areas of the country.

Tourism is now a fastest growing industry in the world. The increasing growth of this industry and its market has increased the competition among the tourist importing countries but there are some problems in the following: Negative impact of Security and Country’s Poor Image. Underdeveloped accommodation and other facilities. Lack of Infrastructure and Government Support Ineffective marketing strategies and poor promotional activities. Insufficient fund and government support. Unavailability of updated information . Problems of tourism Sector in Bangladesh

Tourism sector has the potential to make a huge contribution in the economy of Bangladesh. By ensuring proper development of this sector. It is possible to earn a large amount of foreign currency which will contribute to the growth of national economy. It will help increase household income at community level as well as the revenue of the government. The people in Bangladesh may get opportunities to compare their life style with the people of developed countries. It may be possible to introduce Bangladesh to the rest of the world through tourism sector. Domestic & foreign tourists like to visit historical places, archaeological site as well as ancient battlefields which in the long run may help strengthen the political unity of the country. Prospect of Tourism Sector in Bangladesh

Tourism can also play an important role in social and cultural development through cultural exchange & contact between people of different race & nationalities. This sector has also educational significance. It also creates opportunities of networking for investment and business development purposes.

The government has to play a key role for preparation of policy guideline for planning and development, advertising, regulation and marketing of tourism sector. It will help government to solve unemployment problem and as well as act as source of revenue collection. The government should be monitoring the activities of travel agencies which are involved in tour operation. Every travel agency should be enlisted with Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB). National Tourism Organization should be strengthened with provision of adequate fund, skilled manpower and as well as technical expertise to run the organization smoothly. Strategic Master Plan for tourism, which was prepared by UNDP/WTO in 1990 and later updated by WTO should be implemented for sustainable tourism development. Management Strategies for Improvement of Tourism Sector

Necessary initiatives should be taken to increase cooperation between public and private sectors to provide services for the travellers. In the long term, it will be beneficial not only for people who travel, but also for people in the communities they visit, and for their respective natural, social and cultural environments. Bangladesh tourism faces many problems including areas of marketing, management, infrastructure, policy, safety, regulation and image. All problems are not unique and similar to the reality of worldwide tourism destinations. Solutions should be found out considering every aspect carefully and valuable suggestions should be provided based on experience, opinion of experts and relevant knowledge of others

The expansion of the tourism throughout the world has increased competition among the tourist destinations, trying to attract more tourists by adopting appropriate marketing techniques and strategies. As an important element of marketing mix, promotion plays the vital role in tourism marketing as like any Tourists want to know in advance about the attractions and the facilities of a particular destination and the same safe, secured and enjoyable. product and service . By using the different tools of promotion, marketers attempt to serve this purpose and try to influence the potential tourists’ attitudes in favour of the sponsor’s destination and grow interest to visit the same. Promotion plays an important role in tourism marketing, the tourism marketing in Bangladesh is far behind from reaching this goal, which leads to incapacity to attract a significant number of tourists. Applicability of promotional activities in the Tourism Sector

Both the private and public tour operators of Bangladesh have the resource constraints and cannot afford the sufficient budget for the promotional purpose. As a result, they cannot conduct the promotional measures for the said industry by using international media which is essential for attracting the foreign tourists . The country has a positive trend in arrivals and earnings and it can be increased to a significant level if the country can undertake appropriate promotion measures by increasing the allocation for this purpose. The country also needs to employ creative people for this purpose and the quality of the promotional materials also needs to be developed. The promotional activities should also be directed in correcting the present image towards Bangladesh as tourists’ destination. By ensuring these measures Bangladesh tourism industry can emerge as one of the major contributing sector of the national economy of Bangladesh.
