Saturday Night Live: “Winter Formal” 15
th. January, 2022.
“ Saturday Night Live,” NBC’s Emmy Award-winning late-night
comedy showcase,”
“SNL” “is still the most pervasive influence on the art of comedy in
contemporary culture.”
“SNL” “is making headlines and influencing the political dialogue while
skewing it at the same time.”
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Comedy (from the  Greek: κωμῳδία, kōmōdía ) is a genre of
fiction that consists of discourses or works intended to
be humorous or amusing by inducing  laughter, especially
in theatre, film, stand-up comedy, television, radio, books, or any
other entertainment medium.
Satire and political satire use comedy to portray persons or social
institutions as ridiculous or corrupt, thus alienating their audience
from the object of their humor.
In my opinion –
What I observed in “Winter Formal” was neither comedy nor
satire, rather it was derision.-
Derision- “a strong feeling that someone or something is
ridiculous and not worth considering seriously, shown by laughing
in an unkind way or by making unkind remarks” Oxford Advanced
American Dictionary.

As a parent, I share the deep hurt that those with FASD will feel on
viewing this production of Saturday Night Live.
We can be sure that other disabilities such as Autism and Down
Syndrome would never be portrayed in such a derisive manner.
We have the right to ask why was such a derisive production made, and
what motivated the actors, writers and producer. It would be interesting
to know what knowledge they have of the disabilities of FASD, and
what is their position on alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
It would also be of significance to know what is the position of NBC,
and its parent company Comcast, regarding prenatal alcohol exposure
and FASD: keeping in mind the advertising revenue provided by the
alcohol industry.
Such productions contribute to the increasing marginalizing of FASD.
