INTRODUCTION Retirement from active service is a stage that every worker must surely reach whether he or she prepares for it or not . The restriction in the labour working age is to prevent an ageing labour force by allowing entrants of young-able-bodied labour for increase efficiency and productivity. Thus , retirement is an inevitable stage of ageing where the individual gradually disengages form the mainstream of active work, social work and is eventually replaced with younger ones (Buckley, 2019).

CONCEPT OF RETIREMENT AND CIVIL SERVANTS Buckley (2019) define retirement is an inevitable stage of ageing where the individual gradually disengages from the main stream of active work, social work and is eventually replaced with younger ones. Retirement is often portrayed as a time of leisure, relaxation, and freedom from work-related stress (Huber, 2019 ). However , these expectations are only sometimes realistic or attainable for everyone.

CONCEPT OF RETIREMENT AND CIVIL SERVANTS CONT’D This can result in inadequacy, fear of not meeting the desired standard, and anxiety about the future ( Desplat , 2018). Civil servants composed mainly of career bureaucrats hired on professional merit rather than appointed or elected, whose institutional tenure typically survives transitions of political leadership. The civil servants are workers employed by the government at different levels to perform some specific tasks or duties.

FORMS OF RETIREMENT Voluntary or Self Retirement Compulsory or Forced Retirement Mandatory or Statutory Retirement RETIREMENT AGE I n Nigeria, the statutory working age in the public service is fixed at sixty (60) years or thirty-five (35) years of unbroken active working service before retirement; whichever comes up first .

CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH RETIREMENTS IN NIGERIA Physical Disabilities and Ageing Intellectual Problems Physical Problems Behavioural Problems Emotional Problems Psychological Problems

PREPARING FOR EFFECTIVE RETIREMENT IN NIGERIA Step 1: Planning adequately and determining how much your financial need in retirement is very important. Step 2: Calculate the sum to be received in lump sum (terminal benefits) on retirement time. Step 3: Select the suitable retirement plan that enables you to cater for your post- retirement requirements. Step 4: Start investing immediately you gains employment, and you can enjoy the power of compounding and increase in your financial stability.

POST-SERVICE STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE RETIREMENT Establish business in one’s own area of specialization Invest in Small Sideline Business Bank Fixed Deposits Open a Retirement Saving Account Invest in Stocks and Shares Real Estates Investment Retirement Annuity

ECONOMICS AND BENEFITS OF PROPER HEALTHCARE AMONG RETIREES Develop a dietary eating plan Post-retirement task should be done with ease and moderately Warm up with a low impact exercise Visit your Doctor/hospital regularly to check your blood pressure (BP), blood glucose, etc. Drink plenty of fluids. When doing any activities, sweating means you are losing fluid and this has to be replaced. Take rest and sleep when getting exhausted. Participate in self-care programme that could promote self-cleanliness

LIFE EXPECTANCY OF RETIREES IN NIGERIA The empirical research by Cheng (2017) revealed that “early retirement leads to greater life expectancy and vice versa.” This claim was refuted by Paterson (2020) that “early retirement does not lead to a longer life.” Paterson supported his argument that “industrial workers who retired at 60 or even 55 do not live longer than those who worked until 65. These findings contradict the widespread belief that early retirement is associated with longer life expectancy. On the basis of the above contradicting findings, Paterson (2020) concluded that death rates improve with increasing age. This suggests that people who wish to enjoy longer lives should recognize the importance of healthy active lifestyle, whatever age they choose to retire .

FACTORS INFLUENCING LIFE EXPECTANCY OF RETIREES IN NIGERIA Age Gender Education Income and Occupation Marital status Religion Health behaviours Smoking and Alcohol Obesity

SCHEMATIC ILLUSTRATION OF THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK The Humanistic Theories (Maslow,1954 )

NURSING IMPLICATIONS Nursing Practice: Nurses can play a vital role by informing the Elderly about this periods especially regarding their health, helping to normalize the topic and decrease stigma. They can recommend lifestyle modifications to enhance quality of life. 2. Nursing Education: Nursing programs must ensure future nurses can teach and counsel patients about health issues. They can incorporate these teachings into relevant courses to improve student knowledge and confidence in managing these typical conditions.

RECOMMENDATIONS Workers ’ unions should regularly organize guidance and counseling programmes /financial counselling. Government should strengthen the regulatory and supervisory framework and empower it to successfully and effectively check earring pension fund administrators in the country. Employers and government should organize timely, adequate preretirement orientations/seminars/workshops for their workers.

RECOMMENDATIONS CONT’D The retirees and employees are encouraged to invest in themselves by self-sponsor to retirement seminars and workshops. Government should establish a National Public Services Rehabilitation and vocational centre to provide a series of skills acquisition training and counseling programmes for workers about to retire from active service. The issues of regular medical check-ups should not be over- looked since retiree may be prone to old age sicknesses like hypertension, obesity, diabetes, osteoarthritis, etc.
