PROJECT INTRODUCTION

ABSTRACT : The study focus mainly on the design of Urban Square which act as Inclusive Space serving the neighbourhood community and design respecting the Context. The neglected urban pockets has the great scope for developmental opportunities serving both the inclusivness and reviving of these hidden pockets. Neglected urban spaces are barren lands that have been forgotten by the government making these lands gaps scattered in the city like rivers that are natural freshwater streams that flow into a canal that leads to the sea, a lake, or another river. Harmonizing these areas into the society will offer opportunities for these spaces to become a liveable, social, urban public spaces. Unfortunately, forgotten, and neglected waterbody areas are found in the cities, thus spaces that allow socialisation, relaxation, and the experience of different activities for different classes of society are nowhere to be found, but there are detached, unsafe spaces that give the feeling of surviving rather than living. Neglected spaces are not just empty lots, they can be old and incomplete sidewalks, spaces under bridges and even allies between buildings. Reusing and redesigning these spaces can bring beauty and quality to the cityscape and promote a healthy and safe lifestyle. It takes a great amount of imagination and potential to find a suitable activity or usage for the forgotten spaces. (Sung ,2009)

NEGLECTED URBAN SPACE : EMPTY PLOTS/PARKING LOTS UNDER HIGHWAYS/ BROAD ROADS TERRAIN UNDULATIONS UNDER FLYOVERS WATERFRONTS BORDER VACUUMS- RAILWAYS/ROADWAYS WATERFRONTS SEA RIVER CANAL LAKE Lakes are an inherent part of the ecosystem. Lakes have traditionally served the function of meeting water requirements of the populace for drinking, household uses like washing, for agriculture, fishing and also for religious and cultural purposes . Apart from these functions, which involve direct use of the lake water, lakes are also known to recharge ground water, channelize water flow to prevent water logging and flooding . Lakes are also host to a wide variety of flora and fauna, especially birds. The need to initiate efforts to restore, conserve, manage and maintain the lakes as a valuable part of the whole ecosystem could no longer be ignored.

conversion of natural greens into residential/commercial/industrial reducing impervious surface increased surface runoff water and contaminated drainage & strom water from urban lands gets settled into low lands sucks as lakes Euthrophication of urban lakes contaminated lakes UNUSED UNHYGIENIC CONTAMINATED UNSAFE SHRINKAGE OF LAKE ENCROACHMENT CONSTRUCTION OF RAILWAYS/ROADWAYS NEED FOR REVIVAL : POINT SOURCE NON-POINT SOURCE Power plants Sewage Treatment Plants Industrial Plants Agriculture runoff Sewage treatement plants Stormwater runoff SOURCES OF POLLUTION IN LAKE

Identification of problems in & around my hometown-Trichy LAKE as unused Urban pocket & contaminated /dead zone ( based on Articles) There less well known spaces for recreational and entertainment in Perambalur so by developing these urban waterbody pockets into an inclusive recreational space based on people’s affordability and need will have an better urban design for developing infrastructure. affordable entertainment / recreational spaces & inclusive public space reclaiming unused pockets design respecting context & nature REVIVAL OF THURAIMANGALAM LAKE,PERAMBALUR :

AIM: To Revive & Design inclusive public space around the Thuraimangalam Lake,Perambalur OBJECTIVES: - To study the Neighborhood Context of the Lake. - To study the importance of Ecological Conservation . - To study the Inclusive public space . - To propose ideas for lake development & Revival of the Lake respecting the context of the site & neighborhood. NEED OF THE STUDY: Social Benefits: Public spaces are open to all which increases social equality and stability. These spaces bring people together, communities together providing meeting spaces. These spaces can become a venue for social event. Environmental Benefits: Revitalization of waterbodies Ecological Conservation Well-designed streets and public spaces encourage walking and cycling, and have the power to make our environment a safer.

Economical Benefits: Infrastructure Development High quality public environment can generate a good economic life. By good parks , squares and gardens other public spaces are vital business marketing tool . Well maintained environment increases the number of people visiting retail areas providing local employment oppoutunities.

ROLE OF LAKES : ECOLOGICAL RECREATIONAL AFFORDABLE & ADAPTABLE ENTERTAINMENT- SERVING AQUATIC SPECIES MODERATING STORMWATER, SURFACE RUNOFF. TREATING DRAINAGE & WASTE WATER REGULAR MAINTAINENCE BY THE CONCERNED ORGANIZATION COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION MAKING THE DEAD ZONE AS ACTIVE SPOTS Chanelling of drainage & stormwater Proper STP & Wastewater plant Wetland design construction of bunds Watershed Management Micro-climate design strategies Parks,Promenades,Gardens Shopping/Commercial Streets Peculiar Parks / Sensory park Gardens Food Streets Amphitheatre Roadways & Pathways Eateries like Cafe & Restaurant Public amenities like parking, atm, toilets,Bus stop design etc.. Instagrammable hub amenties supporting the Neighborhood social gathering spot like Concerts halls/Open Air Theatre Art gallery & Exhibitions enhacing local community & small scale Employment oppoutunities DESIGN INTERVENTIONS : ROADMAPPING THIS PROJECT TO OTHER LAKES IN THE CITY CREATING AWARNESS ON ECOLOGICAL CONSERVATION Inclusive Publice Square SCOPE & LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT:
