DEFINITION Rome-Berlin Axis was an agreement between Hitler and Mussolini to work together on matters of common interest.

Question 1 What two events drew Mussolini closer to Hitler?

Answer 1 The Italian invasion of Abyssinia. The League of Nations’ decision to impose sanctions on Italy.

Question 2 Which pre-Second World War conflict in Europe saw the two countries fighting together?

Answer 2 The Spanish Civil War.

Question 3 The agreement was followed by two more important political pacts involving the two countries. Name them.

Answer 3 The Anti- Comintern Pact (1937). The Pact of Steel (1939).

What did the Rome-Berlin Axis clear the way for Hitler to do?

Important The Axis marked a significant reversal of Italian foreign policy, particularly as it was signed a year after Mussolini agreed to the Stresa Front with Britain and France.
