Reminders Rhetorical choices are usually one of these three things : Something Repeated A Deliberate Decision A Change Repetition of the word “us” to create a sense of unity and brotherhood Repetition of words related to honour and glory Repeated anecdotes about the speaker's personal successes and failure A dopts a parental persona Uses data and statistics as opposed to emotions Chooses to use quotations from other speakers Deliberately selects examples that support her position Employs a passionate and patritoic style of diction Switches from an emotional to professional tone Focuses attention on himself before switching to examples from the audience Uses a highly elevated style of diction before using a more colloquial vernacular

America needs its nerds – 10 minutes As you read the passage, consider these ideas. Make notes and annotations on the page. What is the purpose of this speech? What does the speaker want us to understand? What is the general tone of this passage? Who would be listening to this speech? What are three rhetorical choices the writer uses?

Self reflection – HW Write a few sentences about what you have learnt today: Are you able to find the purpose easily? What important skill did you learn from today? What seems hardest to you? Is there something that still confuses you? How quickly can you find rhetorical choices? How would you judge your performance today?
