Continue… 1) Solvent Extraction :- RBO produce from Solven ( normally hexane) extraction is preferred as cooking oil. The solvent oil mixture is called miscella . Separation of oil and hexane by distillation stages. 2) Degumming :- It involves the removal of Phospholipids & Lipoprotiens through hydration with citric or phosphoric acid. Crude oil contains upto 1200ppm of phosphorus equivalent of 3% phospholipids. After degumming, this level reduce to 20 ±50 ppm. For physical refining, P level lower than this. 3) Neutralization :- Free Fatty Acids are removed by caustic soda ( NaOH ) in the Neutralizationprocess . 4) Bleaching :- To remove pigments (chlorophyll & carotenoids) of RBO by absorption on activated carbon or bleaching earth. These are remove Polycystic aromatic hydrocarbon and trace p hospholipids , metal, soap .
Continue.... 5) De-Waxing & Winterize:- Dewaxing is total crystallization time goes below 20 hrs. If proper crystal growth doesn’t taken, then more loses occurs in dewaxing and filtration slow down. So the dewaxing and winterization steps done by maintaining the oil at a low temperature to solidify waxes are separated as waste products. Deodorization:- Final step of refining process of RBO to produce oil with bland flavor and good shelf life. This requires to remove the oxidation products responsible for off flavor. It is achieved by high temperature. Between 170degree C & 250 degree C under reduced pressure. Deodorize distillate is useful source of sterile & tocopherols, neutral oil, fatty acids, Unsponifiable matters.
