• Routine Lift
A lift can be categorized as routine if it is repetitive in nature and
involves loads that are similar in terms of shape & size.
• Non-Routine Lift
A lift refers to lifting operations that are complex, carried out for
the first time or lifting close to the lifting capacity of the crane.

It is a misperception to assume that so long as
the weight of the load is below a certain tonnage,
it can be classified as a routine lift and therefore
require less planning or supervision.

Unfortunately , most crane accidents
happened during routine lift rather than non-
routine lift!!!
Hence, in essence, any lifting operations
whether routine or non-routine warrant the
same level of safety considerations.

Allliftingoperationsshouldbeplannedtoensurethattheyarecarriedoutsafely
andthatALLforeseeablehazardsareidentifiedandanyriskseliminated.
Onlytestedandcertifiedcranes,liftinggearandequipmentshouldbeused.This
equipmentcanberecognisedbyitsidentificationorplatenumberandSafeWorking
Load(SWL)orWorkingLoadLimit(Wll)markings.Incertaincasesitwillalsohavea
currentcolourcode.

To help produce lifting plans that any one can read and understand we should
ask ourselves the following:

•Do you have PTW for this job?
•Are you experienced, competent and trained to do the work?
•Do you know the weight of the object being lifted. The size, shape and center of
gravity?
•Method of slinging/attaching the load.

•Availability of approved lifting points on load.
•Proximity hazards, obstructions, path of load.
•Conflicting tasks in area.
•Are you working under a suspended load?
•Overturning/load integrity/need for tag lines.

•Number of personnel required for task.
•Communication requirements.
•Environmental conditions including weather.
•Pre-used equipment checks by operator.
•Have you been given a toolbox talk?

•Always match the SWL of one sling to the load weight as a minimum.
•i.e. If the load is a single point 10t lift then a minimum of 1 x 10t sling will be
required.
•If the load is directly attached to lift points i.e. no double wrap & choke and you
require 2 slings to lift the load as in tubulars etc, both slings would be a minimum
of 10t SWL each.
•If one sling breaks then the other is supporting the full load & rated accordingly.
•When double wrap & choke a load, take off 50% of your sling SWL. The load you
lift should always match the sling SWL individually.

•Although 90 degrees is the maximum
recommended combined angle, it is often
considered good practice to try and achieve a 60
degree combined angle.
•Less combined angle reduces probability of
failure.
•Better to be under 90 degree than over.

•To obtain a combined angle of 60 degrees,
increase the length of slings.
•Why -because if slings are too short this creates
severe angles and increases tension in the slings.
•Selecting a suitable lift point closer to the center
may allow shorter slings to be used.
•Select slings of the same length to avoid creating
an imbalance of the load.
