RIVER POLLUTION What is River pollution? River pollution is a form of water pollution which refers to the introduction of different chemicals and other pollutants such as sewage, food waste and farm effluents into rivers.
SOURCES OF RIVER POLLUTION INDUSTRY AGRICULTURE HOMES
INDUSTRY There are three main ways that industries contribute to water pollution.. Direct disposal of waste into natural waterways causes waste to build up within the water. A pungent odor is the result. Additionally, this waste decreases the amount of oxygen in water, causing the death of aquatic animals or other organisms. The emission of toxic fumes into the air causes acid rain. When the acid rain falls, it contaminates local natural waterways including streams, rivers and lakes. This causes the death of many aquatic animals. Thermal pollution occurs when water used to cool hot machinery is released into waterways and the temperature of the water is drastically increased. This temperature change may cause aquatic life to die and numbers to be reduced.
AGRICULTURE It’s common for farmers to use fertilizers and other chemicals on their crops to help them grow. when it rains, these chemicals join the run-off water and flow into streams, rivers and lakes, thus polluting them. Even just the sediments of dirt, without any chemicals, are pollutants in the fact that they cause the waterways to become cloudy and muddy.
HOMES Households are a leading cause of water pollution by the trash they create. Even if taken to landfills, often this trash finds its way to natural waterways. Human waste, disposed of typically by sewers, pollute water. Oils and anti-freeze leaked from vehicles pollute water.
EFFECTS OF RIVER POLLUTION Spread of disease : Drinking polluted water can cause cholera or typhoid infections, along with diarrhea. Affects body organs: The consumption of highly contaminated water can cause injury to the heart and kidneys. Harms the food chain: Toxins within water can harm aquatic organisms, thus breaking a link in the food chain.
EFFECTS OF RIVER POLLUTION Causes algae in water: Urea, animal manure and vegetable peelings are food for algae. Algae grow according to how much waste is in a water source. Bacteria feed off the algae, decreasing the amount of oxygen in the water. Flooding: The erosion of soil into waterways causes flooding, especially with heavy rainfall. Harms animals: Birds that get into oil- contaminated water die from exposure to cold water and air due to feather damage. Other animals are affected when they eat dead fish in contaminated streams.
RIVER POLLUTION PREVENTIONS CONSERVE SOIL Erosion is one of the biggest causes of water pollution today. Planting vegetative covers, strict erosion management and implementing beneficial farming methods are possible approaches to soil conservation. DISPOSE OF TOXIC CHEMICALS PROPERLY It’s always a good idea to use lower VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) products in your home whenever possible. If you do use toxic chemicals, such as paints, stains or cleaning supplies, dispose of them properly. Paints can be recycled and oils can be reused after treatment. AVOID PLASTICS WHEN POSSIBLE Plastic bags in the river is a well documented water pollutant. Keep this problem from getting worse by changing to reusable grocery bags whenever possible.
RIVER POLLUTION PREVENTIONS STP: The towns and cities should also have facilities to clean the sewage effluent. All towns and cities must have Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) that clean up the sewage. • ORGANIC METHODS: Farmers should give up chemicals and pesticides in farming and should instead adopt organic methods of farming thus reducing chemical pollution of rivers.
RIVERS OF INDIA 14 major, 55 minor and numerous small rivers. India is often referred as the “Land of Rivers”. In fact riverbanks first hosted human civilizations in India as elsewhere in the world. The people worship the rivers as gods and goddesses. The river systems provide irrigation, potable water, cheap transportation, electricity, as well as livelihoods for a large number of people all over the country.
RIVER POLLUTION IN INDIA Indian cities generate 10 billion gallons or 38 billion litres of municipal waste water every day, out of which only 29% of it is treated. Yamuna has become a garbage dump area with more than 57 % of Delhi’s waste thrown into it. around 80% of Yamuna’s pollution is due to raw sewage. Ganga is considered to be the most polluted river in India. Approximately 1 billion litres of raw, untreated sewage is dumped in Ganga regularly.
EFFECT OF POLLUTION IN GANGA RIVER One person in the Ganga Basin dies every 60 seconds of diarrhea and eight out of every 10 Indians suffer from amoebic dysentery each year. 80 per cent of all health problems in India and one-third of all deaths are said to be attributed to Ganga . River.
TAMILNADU The Noyyal River is a small river in Western Tamil Nadu, and a tributary of Kaveri River and flows through many villages and the cities of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Karur Orathuppalayam Dam , is located on the Noyyal River in Tirupur District. The dam was built in 1992. It has an ayacut of over 10,000 acres in Tirupur and Karur Districts. It was used by the farmers only for five years as it became a storage tank for textile effluents after that. 70.5% people effected by skin disease,26.67% effected by eye irritation and other disease.
TRICHY-UYYAKONDAN CANAL The 1,000-year-old Uyyakondan canal, built by Raja Raja Cholan and renovated by Kulothunga Cholan , has an ayacut of 32,000 acres and feeds 36 tanks. Several open drains and sewage from houses were let out directly into the canal on the 7-km stretch between Palakkarai and Ariyamangalam . Agriculture was very effected by the polluted water in downstream of our city.
CONCULTION it is our duty to protect our environment. An individual effort may not be sufficient to clean our rivers, but when all of us contribute towards this goal it becomes a big effort. Thus it can help in cleaning up our rivers
