The Rizal Home

Dr. Rafael Palma, one of Rizal’s prestigious biographers, described Rizal’s house as: The house was high and even sumptuous, a solid and massive earthquake-proof structure with sliding shell windows. At the back there was an azotea and a wide, deep cistern to hold rain water for home use.
Behind the house were poultry yard full of turkeys and chickens and a big garden of tropical fruit trees. By day, it hummed with the noises of children at play and the songs of the birds in the garden. By night, it echoed with dulcet notes of family prayers.
A Good and Middle-Class Family

Had a simple, contented, and happy life. Don Francisco and Doña Teodora loved their children but never spoiled them. They are strict parents, they trained their children to love God, behave well, to be patient, and to respect people especially the old folks.
Whenever their children got into a mischief, they were given a sound spanking. They believe in the maxim "Spare the rod and spoil the child". Everyday the Rizal’s heard mass in the town church, particularly during Sundays and Christian holidays. They also pray daily at home.
Angelus during sunset and Rosary before going to bed. The Rizal children were given an ample time to play at the azotea or in the garden by themselves. While older siblings are allowed to play with the children of other families.
