Road Safety

Pedestrians Use Footpaths wherever it is provided. Where footpath are not provided separately, walk on the right side of the road facing the on-coming traffic. Do not allow children below 7 years to walk alone on the road. Do not step on the road without ensuring that it is safe to do so. Do not loiter or play in the road. Be careful at blind corners. Do not step out from behind a stationary vehicle or slow moving bus without making sure that the road is clear. Find a safe place to cross the road. Do not try to cross between parked vehicles. If you have to cross between parked vehicles, stop where you can be seen and are able to look out for traffic. Look al round and listen for traffic before crossing the road. Make sure which way the traffic is moving. Do not step on to the road if you see or hear any emergency vehicle i.e., police vans, fire brigade, ambulance etc. Never get on or off a bus unless it is standing at a bus stop. Signal the bus to stop and do not board the bus until it has come to a complete standstill. Do not cross from behind or in front of a bus without looking properly. Enter or alight from a bus only from the door provided for entrance or exit. Do not hang on to a bus by holding any external or internal appendage. Never jump on or off a moving bus. Pedestrians should walk on right side of the road.

Six-step crossing code to cross the road : THINK :   What is a safe place to cross? Where can I see all the traffic properly? Make sure you are not hidden behind a parked car. STOP  :  At the edge of the road where you have decided to cross. LOOK and LISTEN  :  Look both ways, many time, to see if there is any traffic coming. WAIT  :  For all the traffic to pass, and for road to be clear CROSS :  Walk straight across the road. KEEP LOOKING and LISTENING :  Keep looking in all directions as you cross the road until you get to the other side . Situations needing extra care: Emergency vehicles:  If an ambulance, fire engine, police or other emergency vehicle approaches using flashing lights, headlights and/or sirens, keep off the road. Buses:  Get on or off a bus only when it has stopped to allow you to do so. Watch out for cyclists when you are getting off. Never cross the road directly behind or in front of a bus; wait until it has moved off and you can see clearly in both directions. Railway level crossings:  Do not cross if the red lights show, an alarm is sounding or the barriers are being lowered. The tone of the alarm will change if another train is approaching. If there are no lights, alarms or barriers, stop, look both ways and listen before crossing. Street and pavement repairs:  A pavement may be closed temporarily because it is not safe to use. Take extra care if you are directed to walk in or to cross the road.
