INTRODUCTION The Operating System is the core software component of your computer. It performs many functions and is in very basic terms, an interface between your computer and the world outside.
What is an Operating System? The Operating System is the most important program that runs on a computer. Every general purpose computer have an operating system to run other programs. Operating Systems performs basic tasks such as recognizing input from keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of peripheral devices such as desk drives & printers.
Major Functions Providing an interface to the user Managing system resources Managing security & access rights Running applications Process management Extended machine Master Mind
Other Functions Booting the computer Performs basic computer task e.g managing the various peripherals devices e.g mouse & keyboard. Provide user interface e.g command line and graphical user interface (GUI) Handles system recourses such as computer’s memory & sharing of the central processing unit CPU time by various peripheral devices. Provide file management which refers to the way that the operating system manipulates, stores, retrieve & saves data.
Types of operating systems REAL -TIME OPERATING SYSTEM: they are used to control machinery, scientific instrument & industrial systems. SINGALE USER,SINGALE TASK: as the name implies ,this operating system is designed to manage the computer so that one user can effectively do one thing at a time. SINGALE USER, MULTI TASKING : this is the type of operating system more people use on their laptop, computers today. MULTIUSER: a multiuser operating system allows many different users to take advantage of the computer’s resources simultaneously.
DISTRIBUTED: this type of operating system manages a group of independent computer & makes them appear to be a single computer. EMBEDDED: these computers are designed to be used in embedded computers system. They are designed to operate on small machine like PDAs with less autonomy.
Examples of computing devices which uses operating systems: COMPUTERS MOBILE PHONES 3D TELEVISIONS VIDEO GAMES ATM TIKECT WENDING MACHINES
Commonly known operating systems IOS LINUX QNX MICROSOFT WINDOWS IBM z/ os RED HAT
CONCLUSION: World without operating system is like human without soul…..
