Role of Multiple Party in
Democracy
Presented by : Amin Selot
Roll no.: 1

•A multi-party system in politics is a system
of government in which more than two
political parties truly have a chance to get
real political power.
• This means that more than two parties
have a chance to either govern on their
own or to be part of a coalition
government

•Multi-party systems are different from one-party
and two-party systems.
–A one-party system is like China's -- it is basically not a
competitive democracy because only one party has any
chance at power.
–A two-party system is like that of the United States. There
can be many parties (as there are in the US) but only two
of them are relevant and can hope to gain power.
•By contrast, in a multi-party system (such as that
of Germany or Israel) many parties can hope to
have some share of the power.

o A strong multi-party political system ensures
people, with a variety of like opinions, can join
together to advocate for issues and
communicate their views to their
governments.

•Multi-party systems, that are balanced and
competitive, also help channel civic discontent
into constructive policy debate and change,
helping to avoid the violence that can
sometimes plague non-democratic countries.
•Parties become more issue-based and
responsive to citizens needs and concerns,
they become more inclusive of marginalized
groups including women and youth.

•Multi-Party serves as a bridge between the
people and their governments.
•A multiparty system can also bring a lot of
experience into administration, governance
and legislation. It can help foster a feeling of
unity among the followers of various political
ideologies.

•However, reaching a consensus on
important social and political issues can
become very difficult in a multiparty
system.
–A legislative body may lack credibility if political
parties and politicians with dubious pasts are a
part of the legislative body.
– Party coalitions do not always work well, and
this can often happen after elections in a
multiparty system.

–In a multiparty system, a political party with a
radical agenda can get elected to power, and this
can prove to be catastrophic.
