Roles and responsibilities of Nurses in M aterial M anagement

RESPONSIBILITIES OF NURSE ADMINISRATORS/HEAD NURSES He/she should have a sound knowledge of the requirements of materials in each unit under his or her department. A c countable for maintaining adequate equipment , supplies , d r u g s a n d s o l u t i o n s in the ward for better patient ca r e . Formulates and maintains policy about procurement, inventory control, maintenanace and condemnation

Forecast the demands of supplies and equipments every year and should submit request for purchase. Partcipate in the planning process of material management along with top level management and the purchasing committee and ensure the procurement of quality material s . Responsible for coordinating all departments regarding purchase and utilization of materials

Maintaining inventory and stock of all items and supplies. He/she ensures that records of supplies and equipments are accurate. It should be checked periodically. Arranging and assisting in audit of materials

Arranging for condemnation of articles in accordance with the down policies of the organization and maintaining a dead stock register. Arranging for preventive maintenance wherever necessary. Give feedback about the materials, regarding functioning and quality to the purchase department.

Orienting Nursing personnel on material management policies from time to time. Evaluation the efficacy of the material management system followed in particular Nursing unit

RESPONSIBILITIES OF NURSE ADMINISRATORS/HEAD NURSES M o n i t o ring and s u s t a i n i n g q u a l ity of mater i a l i n c l u d i n g d r u g s a n d s o l u t i o n s . Issuing of items on the basis of "First" in First out", and regular checking of expiry dates of drugs contribute towards safety. Indenting, receiving, storing, checking and timely replenishing of all necessary equipment, supplies, drugs and solutions. Maintaining of emergency and buffer stocks.

Head nurses should make sure that staff working in ward know the economic use of materials. Arrange sessions to educate staff in the ward about the economic use of supplies and equipment. The nurses must be vigilant and prevent the misuse of materials. Maintain proper inventory control by giving the responsibility to senior staff nurse.
