Panchakarma For Mental illness . …. “ इन्द्रियाणि मनोबुद्धिर्वर्णश्चास्य प्रसीदति| ” IICh.Su16/18II Unmada is a major psychiatric disorder among all psychiatric illnesses described in Ayurveda . Benefits of Panchakarma treatments have been explained by Charakacharya in Unmada chikitsa . …..“ हृदिन्द्रियशिरःकोष्ठे संशुद्धे वमनादिभिः| मनःप्रसादमाप्नोति स्मृतिं सञ्ज्ञां च विन्दति|| ” IICh.Chi 9/ 28II

Basti Karma for Mental illness तैलं ददात्याशु मनःप्रसादं वीर्यं बलं वर्णमथाग्निपुष्टिम् || IICh.Si 1/30.II Vata dosha restrains and impels the mental activities.( नियन्ता प्रणेता च मनसः, ) and Basti Chikitsa is the main treatment for Vata Dosha ( बस्तिर्वातहराणां ).

Action of Basti through ENS Basti acting over the receptors of ENS stimulate CNS causing secretion of required hormones or other chemicals. ENS works in synergetic with CNS Stimulation with Basti  Activation of concerned part of CNS which precipitates result accordingly

Nasya karma for Mental illness तद्ध्युत्तमाङ्गमनुप्रविश्य मुञ्जादीषिकामिवासक्तां केवलं विकारकरं दोषमपकर्षति||२२|| …. IICh.Si 2/22II The adjacent Nerves called terminal nerves which runs along the olfactory are connected with limbic system of brain including hypothalamus. This limbic system is also connected with the behavioural aspect of human beings, besides control over endocrine secretions. Thus certain drugs administered through the nose may have an impact on immediate psychological functions by acting on the limbic system through olfactory nerves.

Shirodhara for Mental illness Shirodhara induces a relaxed state of awareness that results in dynamic psycho-somatic balance. It increases stability in speech and mind ( Dhatunam Sthairyam vakmanaso -( Sa.Dha.Ka ), prevents disturbed sleep ( jagratsukham ). The Dhara dravya which is falling on head increases the intensity of A-brain waves and decreases brain cortisone and adrenaline levels . The two neurotransmitters- Serotonin and Norepinephrine , are probably normalised by Shirodhara , which regulates a wide variety of neuropsychological process along with sleep.

Abhyanga for Mental illness Abhyanga ,( oil massage) which is one among Dinacharya also have psychological effects. Charaka has mentioned that Vayu dominates in Sparshanendriya ( स्पर्शनेऽभ्यधिको वायुः स्पर्शनं च त्वगाश्रितम्| ( Ch.Su 5/87 ) and I ndriyas are in close contact with Manas . so one should follow it regularly . Massage can lower the psychoemotional and somatic arousal such as anxiety and tension.

Conclusion Mental Health is an integral part of health. Panchakarma being the unique treatment modality of Ayurveda plays an important role in promoting mental health as well as curing mental illnesses. Ayurveda has emphasized on inter-relationship between mental and physical diseases. Acharya Charaka has opined that Manas and Sharira along with Indriyas are the Adhisthana of Vedana . वेदनानामधिष्ठानं मनो देहश्च सेन्द्रियः| IICh.Sh.1/136II It is therefore evident that Ayurvedic concept of disease is both mental as well as physical where Panchakarma purifies the tissues at very deep level and is the ultimate mind-body healing treatment.
