Critiquing Presidential Power
Situation: President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in 1972, citing threats from communist rebels and growing disorder. What power was used? Was it necessary? What were the effects?
After the 1986 People Power Revolution, President Cory Aquino used revolutionary powers to abolish the Batasang Pambansa and create a new government structure. Was this a justified use of power to restore democracy? What challenges came from this decision?
President Arroyo declared a State of National Emergency in 2006 after reports of a coup plot. She also used police power to arrest some political opponents. Did this action protect democracy or suppress it? Was it a proper use of emergency powers?
President Duterte launched an aggressive anti-drug campaign , resulting in thousands of deaths. He claimed it was to protect the country from drug syndicates. Did he go beyond presidential powers? What were the local and international responses?
