ROLE OF PRONUNCIATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGRE

ROLE OF PRONUNCIATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGRE

INTRODUCTION There are 3 level of English pronunciation : Level 1: People don’t understand what you want to say. You use wrong sounds in English words. Level 2: People understand what you want to say, but it is unpleasant to listen to you. Level 3: People understand you, and your English is pleasant to listen to.

INTRODUCTION Change begin with the desire to change. When we combine our desire with proper instruction and practice we achieve success The key to learning to speak English clearly and correctly is training and practice. Clear and accurate speech comes from “doing”.

EXPERTS OPINION ON PRONUNCIATION "If we know the sounds of a word (in English) we can't know how to spell it; if we know the `spelling, we can't know how to pronounce it." (Otto Jespersen, philologist, Essentials of English Grammar, 1905, page 11). "English spelling is almost divorced from its pronunciation and forms hardly any guide as to how words should be pronounced." (Mont Follick , The Case for Spelling Reform, 1964, page 87).

INTRODUCTION when a person learn English as a second Language They are speaking English “Filtered” Through their first language . They are using their native language’s “speech rules” of pronunciation on their new language. They are not aware of the American or British “speech rules”. English is an international Language and taught around the world but regret to say, few of them address the speech rules. This is because many of the teachers who are providing English training do not know of these speech rules.

PRONUNCIATION The act of producing the sounds of speech is called pronunciation. In lots of languages, each letter represent only one sound so its easy to pronounce words just by looking at how the word is spelled. But English is not like that. When you see letters in an English word, they won’t always be pronounced the same way. Take the letter “ c ” for example. In the word cup it is pronounced as “ k ” but it is different to the word “ place ”. When a “ c ” is next to “ h ” it’s often “ ch ” like in “chocolate” but in the word “ache” it is pronounced as “ k ” again. There are many strategies for making the pronunciation better but the International Phonetic Alphabet is such a great tool for students to practice their pronunciation with. As we follow British English language.

INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET

PHONETIC Representing the speech sounds with a set of distinct symbols, each designating a single sound

INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) , an  alphabet  developed in the 19th century to accurately represent the pronunciation of  languages . One aim of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) was to provide a unique symbol for each distinctive sound in a language—that is, every sound, or  phoneme ( smallest unit of speech ) , that serves to distinguish one word from another.

INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET In the IPA every sound has a unique symbol, so when you read it you know exactly how to pronounce the English word. For example the words though, thought, cough all have the same letters o-u-g-h spellings but they are pronounced differently .

PHONETIC CHART

INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET These symbols seems scary at first but these are so helpful when learning English pronunciation because it tells exactly how to say a word. There are 26 alphabets in English alphabets. But there are 44 sounds.

VOWELS A speech sound produced by when the breath flows out through the mouth without being blocked by teeth, tongue or lips

VOWELS There are 5 English vowels, a, e, i, o, u But there are 12 English vowel sounds. Some of them are long some of them are short. Vowel sounds come smoothly from the mouth. These are smooth sounds.

DIPHTHONGS There is another group of vowel sounds called “Diphthongs”. These are sounds that change from one vowel sound to another.

CONSONANTS Consonants are produced when the air stream is obstructed in the vocal tract. Consonant sounds can be characterized according to three main phonetic properties : Place of articulation Manner of articulation Voicing

CONSONANTS The top row are unvoiced consonants which means that sound is made by air moving from the back of your mouth, through out your lips. There is one extra letter that is unvoiced, down the bottom. Unvoiced sounds use just air. You can’t feel anything in your vocal cords.

CONSONANTS All the rest of the consonant sounds are voiced , which means that the sound is made with vocal cords . When you have to produce consonant sounds, first there is blockage of air in the mouth and then release of air.

PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION • Clean Phonetic transcription is / kli:n / It is made up of 4 sounds. k unvoiced consonant l voiced consonant i: vowel sound n voiced consonant Phonetic transcription (also known as phonetic script or phonetic notation) is the visual representation of speech sounds by means of symbols. The most common type of phonetic transcription uses a phonetic alphabet, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet. The  International Phonetic Association  recommends that a  phonetic  transcription should be enclosed in  square brackets  "[ ]". A transcription that specifically denotes only  phonological  contrasts may be enclosed in  slashes  "/ /" instead. If one is unsure, it is best to use brackets since by setting off a transcription with slashes, one makes a theoretical claim that every symbol  phonemically  contrasts for the language being transcribed.

• Standard dictionaries use the IPA to show how words are pronounced. • When you are first learning basic phonetic writing, you can practice first with English spelling, instead of phonetic spelling. The symbols of IPA are based on more complex symbols that may be difficult for a beginner to understand. • Look at the words in a dictionary to get a sense of how to use phonetic spelling. Copy out the phonetic spelling of your favorite words and note the phonetic spelling of each word. Practice saying the terms out loud, based on the phonetic spelling. • Focus on the sound of the words, rather than the spelling of the words. THE TEACHERS AND LEARNERS OF ENGLISH ARE ADVISED TO NOTICE THAT:

THE TEACHERS AND LEARNERS OF ENGLISH ARE ADVISED TO NOTICE THAT : Practice makes a man perfect. Even your English level is high, you can lose your phonetic skills if you have too little practice. To avoid it, just do some simple exercises. read aloud or in a whisper, and repeat the words which you find difficult to pronounce, recite poems or sing songs, observing rhythm and intonation speak English to your friends whose English is good or better than yours too – just for fun and practice The learners should be able to distinguish between vowel and consonant letters. The learners should be able to identify how many syllables a word has.

You can download an app on your Android and I-phone.

You can also use an online translator to translate words into phonetics.
