Position: Bilingual English Professor at National University of Singapore (NUS) Headquarters
People:
-Viviana: Interviewer, Head of Faculty of Humanities
-Melanie: Interviewer, Executive Director
-Ángel: Job applicant, 28 years old
-Marilín: Job applicant, 24 years old
Setting: The interview room. Viviana and Melanie are seated. Ángel and Marilín enter.
Scene Start
Viviana: Hello, please come in. Thank you for coming today. I am Viviana, the Head of the
Faculty of Humanities, and this is Melanie, our Executive Director.
Melanie: Hello, it is nice to meet you.
Ángel & Marilín: Hello, thank you for having us.
Viviana: Okay, we will talk separately. Melanie will speak with Marilín over there, and I will talk
with Ángel here.
(Melanie and Marilín move to another chair to talk.)
Interview 1: Viviana and Ángel
Viviana: So, Ángel. Can you tell me a little about yourself?
Ángel: Yes… um, I am 28 years old. I have a degree in English and a Master’s in Linguistics. I…
I really like teaching, but I sometimes get nervous in big classes.
Viviana: I see. And why do you want this job?
Ángel: I think teaching is interesting. I like to use two languages to help students… and I
consider myself friendly, but I’m still learning how to explain complicated things more clearly.
Viviana: That is honest. What do you think is important for a teacher?
Ángel: Hmm… a good teacher is patient. You need to explain things many times, I guess.
And… listen to the students, yes.
Viviana: Yes, I agree. Do you have any questions for me?
Ángel: Um… yes. What is the best thing about working at NUS?
Viviana: Oh, the students are very nice and they are motivated to learn. Thank you, Ángel. We
are finished here.
Ángel: Thank you very much.
Interview 2: Melanie and Marilín
Melanie: Hello, Marilín. Why do you want to work at NUS?
Marilín: Well… I am 24, and I am studying a Master’s in Educational Technology. I love using
computers and videos in class. I think it makes learning fun. Sometimes I worry that I explain
too much, but I try to improve.
Melanie: That is interesting. How do you feel about using Spanish in an English class?
Marilín:: I think it is okay. Sometimes it helps to explain a difficult word in Spanish… but I know
I need to be careful not to use Spanish too much.
Melanie : Good point. Do you have any questions?
Marilín: Yes. How many students are usually in one class?
Melanie: Usually, about 20 students. Thank you, Marilín. This is the end.
Marilín:: Thank you very much.
