The Romantic Art Song Art song started during the Medieval period but became especially popular during the Romantic era. It is considered a genre of Romantic music. An art song is written by a professional composer and performed by a trained singer.

The main characteristics of an art song are the following: •it is a short piece for solo voice; the verse are well-written and may either be through- composed (each stanza of the poem is sung to new music) or strophic (all stanzas of the poem is sung to same music); •it is often accompanied by the piano using virtuoso techniques; •it has high artistic and literary quality and ends with a postlude (concluding section played by the piano).

A group of art songs that connected by a musical idea is called a song cycle. German art song is known as lied, or lieder when reffering to it's plural form. Early lieder were monophonic and excited during 12th to 13th centuries.

H e studied counter point, keyboard playing, and singing under Michael Holzen. He also studied under the tutorship of Salieri. He was a choirboy in the imperial chapel and studied at the Konvict, the school for court singers. He played violin in the school orchestra and attended school at the imperial and Royal Summary.

Schubert's early instrumental works are romantic and has rich harmony and melody. Although his Symphonies and sonatas use classical outlines, they tend to emphasize expansive melody and evocative harmonies. In his songs, the literary and musical elements are perfectly balanced, matched on the same intellectual and emotional level.

-Although Schubert composed strophic songs, he did not follow set patterns but exploited bold and free forms when the text demanded it. -Schubert wrote over 600 hundred musical pieces. Some of which are the following: Serenade Ave Maria Unfinished symphony Der Elkõnig.

Ave Maria! (Hail Mary in Latin), by Schubert, -is the third of three song whose text is derived from a section of Sir Waller Scoutts poem, “The Lady of the Lake, “ Its original German title is Ellen’s Gesang Ellan’s (Ellen song) Although the song is a prayer, Schubert’s Ave Maria! -was not written with religion practices or the Catholic Church in mind.

It is in the key of B flat Major, in time signature and the form is through composed. The tempo is andante or at walking pace and uses triplets with repeated melodic rhythm patterns.
