1. Paris is at the Capulet crypt to Spread flowers and pay his respects to Juliet.
2. Balthasar is given a letter to deliver to romeo’s father. Balthasar is ordered, by romeo , to leave and not come back. Balthasar does not leave because he worries about what romeo might do.
3. Romeo compares the crypt to the jaws of a monster. He plans to pry the jaws open and add one more morsel of food to the mouth, his own dead body. “Thou detestable maw, thou womb of death Gorged with the dearest morsel of the earth, Thus I enforce thy rotten jaws to open, And in despite I’ll cram thee with more food.” Lines 45-48
4. Paris is going to arrest Romeo and take him to the prince. Romeo fights and kills paris because he is intent on finishing what he has come to do, commit suicide and be beside his beloved Juliet.
5. Paris asks to be carried into the tomb so he can die near Juliet, and Romeo agrees to do this for him. Paris “O, I am slain! If thou be Merciful, Open the tomb, lay me with Juliet.” Lines 72 & 73
6. “A Greater power than we can contradict Hath Thwarted our intents.” LInes 159 & 160 The Friar says a greater power, referring to God or Fate, controls the events. This supports the theme that fate will determine the future and no one has control over their own life.
7. The friar wants Juliet to leave with him and he will hide her “Among a sisterhood of holy nuns.” Line 163
Stay not to question, for the watch is coming. Come, go, good Juliet. I dare no longer stay. Lines 164 & 165 8. Friar Lawrence hears a noise, and does not wish to be found in the crypt with all the newly dead bodies , so he runs away.
9. When there is no poison left. Juliet stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger.
Where be these enemies? Capulet, montague , See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds a Means to kill your joys with love! And I, for winking at your discords too, have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished. Lines 297-300 10. The hatred between the Capulets and the Montagues has brought on all this tragedy. Their hate killed Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt, Mercutio & Paris. The prince feels guilty too because he didn’t deal with their hatred forcefully enough when he should have. The deaths of his kinsmen Mercutio and Paris, are punishing the prince for not acting soon enough. The point that civil discord is ruinous and must not be tolerated is made strongly in this speech. This shows that the power of love can be just as powerful as hatred – love can result in violence and death, just as hate can.
