Definition
Rotation meaning “Regular succession of various members of a group in office”.
■In nursing service and education, it has its own importance.
■In nursing services and education rotation recurrent posting of various groups of
nurses or nursing students belonging to different areas or classes in specific
nursing field’s.
■Example :-Hospital has different types of ward like medicine, surgery, Ortho,
plastic surgery, gynec, antenatal and various types of Ot’sand OPD’s.
■in community centres there maybe clinics, sub centres, primary Health centre,
community Health centre etc.
■“According to need of the hospital and according to the curriculum students and
staff nurses may be rotated to different word units areas for this purpose there
should be a plan this plan is known as rotation plan”.
Types
There are mainly three types of rotation plans :-
1.Master rotation plan
2.Individual rotation plan
3.Clinical rotation plan
1.Master rotation plan
■Is an overall plan of rotation of all students of different courses and different
courses and different years/classes. master rotation plan of 1

year should be prepared separately or in one chart according to the policy of the
institution.
■This plan must be prepared in advance
■For preparing the master rotation plan read guidelines and syllabus issue by
Indian nursing council.
2. Individual rotation plan
■This plan is made to individual.
■It must be kept in mind that each student is posted in their perspective areas.
■Individual rotation plan in College of nursing should be prepared by subject
teacher so that every student can get a chance in particular field or subject of
study like mental health nurse/cssd, dietary departments etc.
3. Clinical rotation plan
■Clinical rotation plan is also necessary for practical point of view.
■According to syllabus clinical learning experience should be planned
■students should be grouped and each group Must be posted according to
learning experience.

Basic principles in planning clinical
rotation
There are several principles in planning a clinical rotation plan main principles are as follows.
1.Clinical rotation plan must be according to curriculum of nursing students
2.In hospital setting clinical rotation plan must be according to hospital policies
3.Rotation of student should be turn simple to complex
4.For students of nursing there should be clinical instructor according to the types of patients
nursed.
5.Clinical teaching staff should be involved for this purpose

year students of any stream should be posted where there will maximum supervision of
qualified and trained nursing staff
7.Overcrowding of students must be avoid in particular unit
8.Rotation plan must be prepared in advance

■To demonstrate a high quality of patient care
■There must be well organised and accurate report and record system
■To participate in orientation programme of students
■Assistant in counselling and guidance
■To corporate in clinical experience during procedure.
