RULES AND
MECHANICS OF
SOFTBALL PLAY
SOFTBALL 1. Objective & Game Structure
• Goal: Score more runs than the opposing team by
hit‑and‑run action and rounding all four bases—first,
second, third, and home plate—successfully.
•Innings: A standard softball game is played over
seven innings, each with a “top” and “bottom” half. The
away team bats first (top), followed by the home
team (bottom).
•If tied after seven, extra innings extend the game
until a winner emerges.
SOFTBALL 2. Teams & Player Positions
•Team size: Typically 9 players on the field in
fastpitch; slow‑pitch can use 10 players.
•Fielding positions (fastpitch): Pitcher, catcher,
first base, second base, shortstop, third base,
plus three outfielders (left, center, right).
Slow‑pitch may include an extra outfielder
(“rover”) or additional infielders.
SOFTBALL 3. Equipment & Field Layout
•Field: Diamond-shaped layout with 60-foot base
paths, grass outfield, and dirt infield. Pitcher
throws from a “rubber” 35–43 ft from home in
fastpitch; distances vary more in slow-pitch.
•Equipment: Softball (11–12 inches in circumference),
bat (max 34 inches long), gloves (position-specific
sizes), and protective gear for catchers.
SOFTBALL 4. Pitching, Balls, & Strikes
•Pitching style: Underhand only. The ball is released primarily
with the hand below waist height.
•Strike zone: Vertical area over home plate between the
batter’s knees and mid‑chest.
•Strikes: Called when a batter swings and misses, doesn’t
swing at a pitch in the strike zone, or hits a fair ball with
fewer than two strikes. Foul balls count as strikes except
when the batter already has two strikes.
•Balls: Four balls result in a walk (batter advances to first
base).
SOFTBALL 5. Batting, Base Running, & Outs
•Batting order: Set before the game and must be followed
consistently. In co-ed leagues, male/female batters often
alternate.
•Getting on base: Via a hit, walk, or being hit by a pitch.
Scoring: A run scores when a player touches all four bases in
order. Home runs—balls hit out of the field in fair territory—
allow unchallenged scoring.
Outs: Occur via strikeouts (3 strikes), catch on fly (anywhere,
fair or foul), force plays at the base, tagging runners off
base, or failing to tag up on caught fly balls.
SOFTBALL •Rule highlights:
-Runners must stay within the base path and may
overrun first base only under specific guidelines.
-Sliding and stealing rules vary by league—some
restricted, some allowed.
SOFTBALL 6. Mercy & Run-Ahead Rules
For blowout games, many leagues
enforce mercy rules (run-ahead rules)
to end games early—for example, ahead
by 20 runs after 3 innings (fastpitch) or
15 after 4 innings (slow‑pitch).
