RULES OF GROUP DISCUSSION Submitted by: Ritvik Singh Jamwal [05311002218]

WHAT IS GROUP DISCUSSION? A group discussion is a methodology used by an organization to gauge whether the candidate has certain personality traits or skills that it desires in its members. In this methodology, the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation, given a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked to discuss the it among themselves for 15-20 minutes. 2

RULES OF GROUP DISCCUSION 3 LISTENING Listen respectfully and actively. SPEECH LEARNING COMMUNICATION Commit to learning, not to debating Avoid blame, speculation, inflammatory language Allow everyone a chance to speak.

Allow everyone a chance to speak Be assertive but in a polite manner with expression in voice. Just speaking throughout the discussion doesn’t make you better. You should learn to give others a chance to speak. Appear pleasant with the other participating members. Be logical while answering or questioning anything. 4

Listen respectfully and actively Listening Skills are Essential for GD round, so carefully listen to what others have to say. Try and listen to others. If the speaker is making an eye-contact with you remember to acknowledge him by nodding your head, so that the speaker is aware that his listeners are listening to him and paying full attention. This will also show that you are vigilant and are an active participant in the discussion. 5

Commit to learning, not to Debating Group discussion opens avenues to you to learn more. Sometimes you might have skipped learning some important aspect of a topic which other student may have grasped while study the same topic. Sometimes you may have some difficulties in learning a topic, when you discuss it. It becomes easier to you to understand the topic with clarity. 6

Avoid blame, Speculation, inflammatory language Being aggressive, shouting and not allowing others in the group to speak, is not appreciated. So be careful and don’t be a bully. Pointing fingers, shouting or any such kind of impolite behavior. Don’t use any slangs or abusive language. Avoid negative body languages like shaking legs, yawning, drumming table, looking here and there or swinging pen or pencils etc. 7
