Speaking Activity: Challenge & Survival Debate (20 minutes) Objective: Practice issuing challenges and discussing emotional responses. Scenario Cards : Give groups different survival scenarios (e.g., surviving in the jungle, escaping a sinking boat). Each group must issue a challenge to another group (e.g., We challenge you to find a way out using only three items! ). The challenged group must accept the challenge and explain their solution while describing their emotional response.
Survival Scenarios: 1️⃣ Lost in the jungle – You have only a bottle of water and a flashlight. 2️⃣ Stranded on an island – You need to find food and shelter. 3️⃣ Trapped in a snowstorm – You must survive without proper winter clothing. 4️⃣ Escaping a sinking boat – You can only grab three items before jumping. 5️⃣ Lost in a desert – Your water supply is running low. 6️⃣ Surviving a plane crash – You land in a remote mountain area. 7️⃣ Facing a wild animal – A bear is approaching your campsite. 8️⃣ Stuck in a cave – You need to find a way out before the tide rises. 9️⃣ Crossing a fast river – You must figure out how to cross safely. 🔟 Surviving a zombie apocalypse – Your food supply is limited, and zombies are everywhere!
🔹 Group A (Issuing the Challenge): "We challenge you to survive in a dense jungle with only a bottle of water and a flashlight. How will you find food and shelter?" 🔹 Group B (Accepting & Answering): "Challenge accepted! First, we will use the flashlight to look for a safe place to rest before it gets dark. Then, we will search for edible fruits and leaves by identifying safe plants. For water, we will try to collect rainwater using large leaves or filter dirty water with cloth." 🔹 Emotional Reaction: "At first, we would feel scared and anxious because we don’t know what’s in the jungle. But as we find food and shelter, we might feel a bit more confident and hopeful." 🟢 Scenario 1: Lost in the Jungle
🔹 Group A (Issuing the Challenge): "We challenge you to survive on an island without any food or tools. How will you find food and water?" 🔹 Group B (Accepting & Answering): "This will be tough, but we’ll try! We will search for coconut trees because coconuts provide both water and food. We will also look for fish or crabs near the shore and try to catch them using sharp sticks. To stay hydrated, we will collect rainwater using leaves or dig a hole in the sand to find fresh water." 🔹 Emotional Reaction: "We would feel hungry and weak at first, but once we find food, we will feel relieved and more determined to survive." 🟢 Scenario 2: Stranded on an Island
🔹 Group A (Issuing the Challenge): "We challenge you to escape from a dark cave before the tide rises. What’s your plan?" 🔹 Group B (Accepting & Answering): "We will first listen for sounds of moving water to determine the direction of the exit. If we have a flashlight, we will use it to navigate. Otherwise, we will move slowly and feel the walls to find a way out. If we see rising water, we will look for higher ground inside the cave until we can escape." 🔹 Emotional Reaction: "At first, we would feel trapped and hopeless, but if we stay calm and focused, we might feel more determined to find a way out." 🟢 Scenario 3: Stuck in a Cave
🔹 Group A (Issuing the Challenge): "We challenge you to escape a sinking boat. You can only take three items with you. What will you choose and why?" 🔹 Group B (Accepting & Answering): "Challenge accepted! We will take a life jacket to stay afloat, a waterproof bag with food and water, and a flashlight to signal for help. Once in the water, we will try to swim toward the nearest land or stay together to avoid getting lost." 🔹 Emotional Reaction: "We would feel panicked and terrified because the boat is sinking, and we don’t know what’s in the water. But if we manage to stay afloat, we might feel a little calmer." 🟢 Scenario 4: Escaping a Sinking Boat
🔹 Group A (Issuing the Challenge): "We challenge you to survive a close encounter with a wild bear. What will you do?" 🔹 Group B (Accepting & Answering): "That’s scary, but we’ll try to survive! First, we will remain calm and avoid making sudden movements. If the bear doesn’t see us as a threat, it might leave us alone. If it approaches, we will slowly back away while keeping eye contact. Running could make it chase us, so we must stay calm." 🔹 Emotional Reaction: "We would feel extremely scared and nervous. Our hearts would be pounding! But if we manage to escape safely, we would feel relieved and thankful." 🟢 Scenario 5: Facing a Wild Animal
At first I was afraid, I was petrified Thinking I could live without you by my side And after spending nights Thinking how you did me wrong I grew strong And I learned how to get along Now you're back From outer space And I find you here With that sad look upon your face I should've changed that stupid lock Or made you leave your key If I'd've known for a second You'd be back to bother me Go on, go, walk out the door Turn around now You're not welcome anymore You're the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye Think I'd crumble? You think I'd lay down and die? No, not I, I will survive Long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive I've got my life to live And all my love to give and I will survive I, I, I will survive
