What is a Quality Notification in SAP QM?
A Quality Notification (QN) in SAP QM is a record that documents a defect, complaint, or issue related to materials, processes, or services.
It acts like a structured way to report, track, and resolve quality problems within the organization or with vendors/customers.
π Key Purposes
Report defects/nonconformities (internally, vendor-supplied, or customer complaints).
Assign tasks and responsibilities for corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Track progress of defect resolution.
Support continuous improvement.
π Types of Quality Notifications
SAP provides standard notification types (configurable by business):
Q1 β Customer Complaint (issues reported by customer).
Q2 β Internal Problem Notification (defects found inside the company).
Q3 β Supplier Defect Notification (issues with vendor-supplied material).
F2 β Maintenance Notification (when integrated with PM).
(Custom types can be defined as per business need.)
π οΈ Main Components of a Quality Notification
A QN generally contains:
Header Data β Basic details (notification type, description, reference material, lot).
Items β Specific defect(s) linked with materials, batches, operations.
Tasks β Corrective or preventive actions (who does what, and when).
Activities β Actions already performed and recorded.
Partners β Who is responsible (vendor, customer, internal department).
π Typical Process Flow
Create Quality Notification (manual or triggered from inspection lot, sales, or purchase).
Record Defects (assign defect codes, describe issue).
Assign Tasks & Responsibilities (corrective measures to individuals/departments).
Perform Activities (track completion of tasks).
Close Notification (once issue is resolved and documented).
π Key SAP T-Codes for Quality Notifications
QM01 β Create quality notification.
QM02 β Change quality notification.
QM03 β Display quality notification.
QM10 β List of quality notifications.
β Example Use Case:
If a customer reports damaged goods, you create a QN of type Q1 (customer complaint) β record the defect β assign task to logistics to check stock β assign task to production for root cause analysis β once actions are complete, close the notification.
T Codes in QM:
1. Quality Planning
QP01 β Create Inspection Plan
QP02 β Change Inspection Plan
QP03 β Display Inspection Plan
QP06 β Display Inspection Plan Changes
QP07 β Create Reference Operation Set
QP08 β Change Reference Operation Set
QP09 β Display Reference Operation Set
QDR1 β Create Dynamic Modification Rule
QDR2 β Change Dynamic Modification Rule

Overview β Quality Notifications Quality notification contains functions for capturing and processing different types of problems or defects which are identified during inspection process. Quality notifications are utilized to analyse the recorded defects and perform root cause analysis of these problems. In addition to standard notification types a customized notifications types are also created as per business requirement. The following QM notification types are pre defined in the system: Customer complaint Complaint against a vendor Internal problem report

Example
Terminologies Notification Category : Identifies notification that belongs to particular application component in the system. The notification category β02β is used for quality notifications in the standard system. Notification Origin: It defines business context in which notification is used Customer complaint (Q1) Complaint against vendor (Q2) Internal problem notification (Q3) Notification Type: It determines the origin, the content and other properties of notification.

Catalog & Catalog Profile The catalogs are combinations of code groups, grouped together according to content. You use catalogs to define, manage, and standardize information (for example, defect types, characteristic attributes, tasks) consistently for all clients or plants. A combination of code groups from different catalogs that are grouped together as allowed values for notification processing. It determines which code groups will be accessible from the various catalogs to record items, tasks, and activities in a notification.

Defects Recording When inspection lot is processed, inspection results are recorded in the form characteristics values or defects. A defect is any property or attribute of a material/product, that does not meet the inspection characteristics specification. You record the defects with the pre defined defects codes maintained in the inspection catalogs.
