What is Theater? Theatre is one major art form that brings together all the other art forms – from painting and sculpture, to installation, to music, to dance, to literature, even to computer arts – in a single production. A story is acted out on stage (or other performance area) by actors portraying the characters, bringing them to life and developing the plot through dialogue and actions, and sometimes through song and/or dance. And Sarsuela is a form of theater .
What is Sarsuela ? Sarsuela is an art form of lyric theatre, comical in nature and is incorporated with singing, dancing and dialogue. It is a play in prose. Sarsuela originated in Spain and was made popular in the Philippines in the 1800’s. It portrays the typical Filipino realities and stories and social relations which viewers can relate in their lives such as elections and freasts , marriage and family, vices and values.

Then, Sarsuela is stories are often following a Filipino character in a love story while engaging several conflicts relating to social, political, economic or cultural issues
Elements of Sarsuela 1) Stage - Serves as a space for actors or performers and a focal point (the screen in cinema theaters) for the audience. 2) Costume – A special kind of clothing's worn by actors on stage in order to aid dramatic actions and interpretations. 3) Character – Carriers of the plays themes, embodiments of the ideas the writer is trying to convey. Characters, particularly main characters, follow an arc in the story, which means that they develop or change over the course of the play 4) Music - Theatre music refers to a wide range of music composed or adapted for performance in theatres. Genres of theatre music include opera, ballet and several forms of musical theatre, from pantomime to operetta and modern stage musicals and revues.
Characteristics of Sarsuela Theme - In an amusing way, zarzuela represents on stage a great variety of aspects that are part of Spanish life, which is why it is considered a fundamental subgenre for its tradition and culture. In this sense, it includes aspects such as festivities and customs, showing the ways of life through characters that at the same time tell amusing anecdotes. This, without leaving aside an important musical catalog of its composers. Development - One of the most important particularities of the zarzuela is related to its point of origin and development, since it is considered as a subgenre of the Spanish tradition for having been configured there not only the birth of the type of musical theater, but also its development, which was carried out by the hand of great authors of Spanish literature.
c) Elements - As we mentioned, zarzuela combines both the musical and the theatrical aspects, so that by mixing these two elements it gives rise to a type of musical theater that begins to recover a series of spoken forms to expose them within their representations. These elements can be presented in duets, trios, instrumental parts, songs, etc. d) Form of composition - The first thing is that zarzuela is a type of musical theater that consists of the spoken word, which alternates with the musical sound, where another series of fragments appear that are sung or can only be interpreted with musical instruments. On the other hand, the use of resources within the composition may vary according to the time and the fashions developed at the time. e) Extension of the Sarzuela - Another of the most important characteristics of the zarzuela is that its extension can vary considerably, so that we can find zarzuelas consisting of one or several acts at the same time with very diverse resources and equally varied musical forms

Sarsuela in the Philippine scene is presented in a one-act and a three-act presentation. Each act may consist of four to five songs. Songs play an important role in the Sarsuela . Songs function as a part of a dialogue among the characters. Its ushers in the emotional state of the characters. Most importantly, it provides fun and entertainment. It gives life to the play
