Satyendra Nath Bose

EARLY LIFE Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1894. Studied at Presidency College and later at the University of Calcutta. Bose received a  Bachelor of Science in mixed mathematics from  Presidency college standing first in 1913.

Research Areas Bose-Einstein Statistics. Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). Quantum mechanics. Elementary particle (“Boson” named after Him )

Bose-Einstein Statistics Collaborated with Albert Einstein on the concept of quantum statistics. Developed the “Bose-Einstein statistics” that describes the behavior of particles with integer spin (now known as bosons). This work laid the foundation for understanding phenomena like superfluidity and Bose-Einstein condensates.

Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) In condensed matter physics, a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter that is typically formed when a gas of bosons at very low densities is cooled to temperatures very close to absolute zero (−273.15 °C or −459.67 °F or 0 K).  Predicted the existence of BEC, a state of matter where particles lose their individual identities and behave as a single quantum entity. Experimental confirmation came decades later (1995) by Eric Cornell, Carl Wieman, and Wolfgang Kasterlee.

Letter to Albert Einstein Respected Sir, I have ventured to send you the accompanying article for your perusal and opinion. I am anxious to know what you think of it. You will see that I have tried to deduce the coefficient  8π ν 2 / c 3  in Planck's Law independent of classical electrodynamics, only assuming that the ultimate elementary region in the phase-space has the content  h 3 . I do not know sufficient German to translate the paper. If you think the paper worth publication I shall be grateful if you arrange for its publication in  Zeitschrift für Physik . Though a complete stranger to you, I do not feel any hesitation in making such a request. Because we are all your pupils though profiting only by your teachings through your writings. I do not know whether you still remember that somebody from Calcutta asked your permission to translate your papers on Relativity in English. You acceded to the request. The book has since been published. I was the one who translated your paper on Generalised Relativity.

LEGACY Bose was honored with the title ” Padma Vibhushan” by the Indian Government in 1954. In 1959, he was appointed as the National Professor, the highest honor in the country for a scholar, a position he held for 15 years. In 1958, He was nominated as Member of Rajya Sabha. He became the President of “Indian Statistical Institute”. He was also Awarded the Meghnad Saha Medal.
