SCAFFOLDINGS AND FORMWORK Presented By Gayathry Satheesan 1
SCAFFOLDING * The temporary structure constructed to support a safe working platform for work men and materials required during building operations is known as a scaffold *The method of its construction is known as scaffolding 2
SCAFFOLDINGS 3
WHY A SCAFFOLD IS CONSTRUCTED ? A scaffold is constructed due to the following reasons : * scaffold is constructed for masonry work of structures , walls, columns etc above ground level generally above 1.5 m * for surface finishing such as plastering ,painting, cleaning of a building etc 4
MATERIALS USED FOR SCAFFOLD The materials mainly used for construction of scaffold are: wood metal 5
WOODEN SCAFFOLDINGS 6
METALLIC SCAFFOLDINGS 7
PARTS OF SCAFOLD 8
STANDARDS Vertical post LEDGER Horizontal member parallel to wall BRACES Diagonal members PUTLOGS Horizontal members normal to wall TRANSOM Putlogs of which both ends are supported on ledger 9
BRIDLE To bridge an opening in a wall BOARDING Plank to support workman TOE BOARD Boards placed parallel to boarding area GUARD RAIL BASE PLATE Plates on ground supporting 10

TYPES OF SCAFFOLDINGS SINGLE OR BRICK LAYERS SCAFFOLDINGS DOUBLE OR MASONS SCAFFOLDINGS CANTILEVER OR NEEDLE SCAFFOLDINGS SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDING TRESTLE SCAFFOLDING STEEL SCAFFOLDING 15
SINGLE SCFFOLDING 16 It consist of a single frame work of standards, ledgers, putlog etc Spaced at a distance of 1.2m from wall Spacing between standard = 2- 2.5m Spacing of putlog is 1.2 -1.5m Boarding & guards is also provided Braces are cross diagonally provided Generally used for brick work
17
DOUBLE SCAFFOLDING It consist of 2 rows of scaffolding First row is at a distance of 200 – 300mm from wall Second row is at a distance of 1 m from first row Putlog is supported on both frames It is also called independent scaffolding Used for stone masonry work 18
19
CANTILEVER/NEEDLE It is cantilevered from the wall It is used when : Construction is in upper parts Ground is too week Ground level is required to be free of obstruction 20
SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDINGS They are usually suspended from a roof They are mainly used when a base construction is impossible The platform can move horizontally or vertically Used for painting, whitewashing or distempering cheap 21
TRESTLE SCAFFOLDING Used for maintainace work Consist of movable platform Mounted on tripod, ladder or wheel Use upto 5m height 22
STEEL SCAFFOLDING Steel tubes and steel fitting are used Can be easily erected and dismantled Greater strength Used extensively 23
SUPPORTED SCAFFOLDINGS Supported scaffoldings are used where elevations are required 24
ROLLING SCAFFOLDINGS There are caster wheels on the base that allow the scaffolding to be moved without the need for it to be deconstructed 25
ARIEL LIFT SCAFFOLDING They allow workers to access multiple levels in order to do their job 26
