About This Presentation

Single Cell Protein

Slide Content

SINGLE CELL PROTEIN The dried cells of microorganisms are known as single cells proteins, which used as protein supplement in food or animal feeds. Microorganisms such as Yeast, Bacteria, Fungi

HISTORY OF SCP The term SCP was coined in 1966 by Carroll L. Wilson of MIT. The "food from oil" idea became quite popular by the 1970s, with Champagnat being awarded the UNESCO Science Prize in 1976, and paraffin-fed yeast facilities being built in a number of countries.

STEPS OF SCP

FERMENTATION Fermentation is a metabolic process that produces chemical changes in organic substances through the action of enzymes. In biochemistry, it is narrowly defined as the extraction of energy from carbohydrates in the absence of oxygen.

HARVESTING OF SCP Single cell organisms are usually recovered by the process of centrifugation (Example: yeast and bacteria). Filtration with appropriate membrane is used, when the biomass contains mostly filamentous fungi.

POST - HARVESTING OF SCP Post-harvest management is a system of handling, storing, and transporting agricultural commodities after harvest. For some commodities such as coffee and cocoa, post-harvest activities may include drying and fermenting as well.

PROCESS OF SCP

ADVANTAGES OF SCP The primary advantage of SCP production is the quantity of protein produced. By providing appropriate conditions, microbial culture can create a high amount of protein. Microorganisms have a much faster growth rate. Under optimum conditions, these microorganisms can generate a large amount of biomass.

DISADVANTAGES OF SCP SCP can potentially produce allergic reactions in people who have a delicate digestive system or whose bodies fail to recognize the biomass. A high nucleic acid concentration might also cause an increase in uric acid levels in the blood. Consumption of single-cell protein regularly can result in gout and kidney stones.

MICROORGANISMS FOR SCP SCPs are a group of microorganisms including unicellular algae, fungi, bacteria, cyanobacteria and yeast.

YEAST A bioavailable product which is obtained when primarily using as a culture medium inexpensive various waste substrates including agricultural and industrial wastes .

APPLICATIONS OF SCP Used in chicken and cattle feed. The yeast protein is the only SCP product allowed for human consumption, with the remainder of the SCP being suitable for animal feed. It is mostly used to feed cattle, birds, and fish, and is a good source of protein and other nutrients.
