Settlements Locations where people live together. Engaged in activities Primary Industry Farming, Fishing, Mining, Lumbering Secondary Industry Manufacturing Tertiary Industry Services and Trading

Rural Settlements Villages are the most common form of rural settlement. Engaged in mostly Primary Industry Agriculture, Mining, Fishing, etc.

Urban Settlements Towns and Cities are the most common urban settlements. Chicago, Seoul, Zurich, Kampala, etc.

Characteristics of Rural Settlements Dominant Functions Amenities Way of Life

Dominant Functions Primary activities (Primary Industries) Farming (Growing of crops and rearing of livestock) Mining Lumbering

Amenities Facilities and services provided to people in an area. Primitive water source – wells / rivers. Lack of schools / clinics. Simple dirt tracks, poor transport routes.

Way of Life Simple way of life Slower pace of life Less traffic and pollution More communal living Close family ties

Characteristics of Urban Settlements Dominant Functions Amenities Way of Life

Dominant Features Greater number of functions. Residential, administrative, commercial and industrial functions.

Amenities Large variety Developed transport networks Potable tap water Social services (Community centres , shops, healthcare facilities)

Way of Life Fast pace of life Homes furnished with basic necessities Closer to amenities Higher standard of living and quality of life
