Security and Privacy Issues Prepared by: Mary Joy M. Capito,LPT,M.A.Ed .

What is Malware?

Malware, or malicious software, is designed to harm your computer or steal your personal information. It can slow down your device, steal your passwords, or even lock you out of your files.

What are the types of Malware?

Types of Malware: Viruses- These attach themselves to legitimate files and spread when you open or share those infected files. They can corrupt or delete data. Worms- Unlike viruses, worms can replicate themselves and spread across networks without needing to attach to a file. They can quickly infect many devices. Trojans- Named after the famous Greek story, these disguise themselves as harmless software to trick you into installing them. Once installed, they can create backdoors for attackers. Ransomware- This type of malware locks you out of your files and demands a ransom for access. It can be devastating for individuals and businesses alike. Spyware- This secretly monitors your activities and collects personal information, like passwords and browsing habits, without your consent.

How to protect yourself ?

How to Protect Yourself: Use Antivirus Software- Install reliable antivirus software and keep it updated. Regular scans can detect and remove malware before it causes harm. Update Software- Always update your operating system and applications to close security gaps that malware can exploit. Be Careful with Downloads- Only download software from trusted sources. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening unknown email attachments, as they may contain malware. Backup Your Data- Regularly back up your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. This way, if you fall victim to ransomware, you won’t lose everything.

What is Online Fraud?

Online fraud involves deceptive practices on the internet to steal money or personal information. This can happen through various schemes that often target unsuspecting individuals.

What are the types of fraud?

Common Types of Online Fraud: Phishing- This is a method where scammers send emails or messages that appear to come from trusted sources (like banks or popular websites) to trick you into providing sensitive information like passwords or credit card numbers. Identity Theft- This occurs when someone steals your personal information, such as your Social Security number, to impersonate you. They might open accounts in your name or make purchases without your knowledge. Auction Fraud- In online marketplaces, fraudsters may misrepresent items for sale or fail to deliver items after payment is made, leaving buyers with no recourse. Credit Card Fraud- This happens when someone uses your credit card information to make unauthorized purchases. This can occur through data breaches or phishing scams.

How to stay safe?

How to Stay Safe: Check Sources- Always verify the sender of any emails or messages. Look for signs of phishing, such as poor grammar or suspicious links. Use Strong Passwords- Create complex passwords that mix letters, numbers, and symbols. Use different passwords for different accounts and consider a password manager to keep track of them. Monitor Accounts:- Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions. Report suspicious activity immediately. Educate Yourself- Stay informed about the latest scams and fraud tactics. Knowledge is one of your best defenses.

What is Internet Etiquette?

Internet etiquette, often called "netiquette," is about how to behave respectfully and responsibly online. Good netiquette helps create a positive online environment for everyone.

Key Rules of Internet Etiquette: Be Respectful: Treat others with kindness and consideration, even when opinions differ. Avoid personal attacks or derogatory remarks. Think Before You Post: Before sharing something, ask yourself if it’s appropriate and how it might be perceived. This helps prevent misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Avoid Flaming: Flaming is posting inflammatory comments meant to provoke others. Instead, focus on constructive criticism and calm discussions. Respect Privacy: Never share someone else’s personal information without their permission. This includes photos, addresses, and contact details. Acknowledge Sources: When sharing ideas or content from others, always give proper credit. This builds trust and respect in online communities.

Tips for Good Online Behavior: Communicate Clearly: Use simple language and be clear about your points to avoid confusion. Avoid using all caps, as it can come across as shouting. Engage Positively: Contribute thoughtfully to discussions, and be open to different perspectives. A positive attitude encourages others to engage constructively. Keep Your Information Safe: Regularly review and adjust privacy settings on your social media accounts to control who can see your information and posts. Be cautious about friend requests and connections from unknown people.
