Theory behind SCC or High workable Concrete
Paste ------Water + cement
Mortar -----Paste + Fine Aggregate
Concrete ----Mortar + Coarse Aggregate
Concrete is a suspension of coarse Aggregate in mortar
Mortar is a suspension of fine Aggregate in paste
Paste is a suspension of fine cement in water

Adequate Viscosity
Increase the water
powder ratio (w/p ratio)
Use of Super plasticizers
Decrease the water
powder ratio
Use Viscosity Modifying
Agent
To increase the
Deformability of the
paste

Cement:
All types of cement can be used
Typical cement content: 350 to 450 kg/m
3
Higher cement can cause higher shrinkage and thermal stress issues
Lesser cement possible with use of supplementary cementitious
materials
Type and quality of Ingredients

12
Supplementary Cementitious Materials:
Fly ash, GGBS, Micro silica can be used
Improves workability and cohesiveness, reduces bleeding and
segregation
Improves durability and overall performance of Concrete
Type and quality of Ingredients

13
Aggregates:
All sound aggregate meeting normal requirements
They can be crushed or natural aggregate of any mineral
composition(Lime stone, Dolomite, quartz, Basalt etc)
Minimum size of aggregate is limited to 20mm and aggregate
shape should be round or cubical
Elongated aggregates do not provide satisfactory mix due to
increase in internal friction

Super Plasticizers:
TheyareessentialcomponentsofSelfCompactingConcrete.
Sulphonatedmelamineformaldehyde,Napthalaneformaldehyde

commonlyused.

Large quantity of fines(500 to 650 kg/m
3
)
Use of High range water reducing admixture (Water reduction :25%)
Viscosity modifying admixture
Limiting the maximum size of coarse aggregate
Higher fraction of Fine Aggregate
Mechanism of SCC

5/31/2021
16
Faster construction
Reduction in site manpower
Improved filling capacity of highly congested structural member
Better surface finishes
Easier in placing
Improved durability
Greater freedom in design
Thinner concrete section
Reduced noise levels due to absence of vibration
Safer working environment
Advantage of Working with SCC

As per the European Guidelines for Self-Compacting Concrete
Equipment's Required to find the Flow Properties of SCC
