Introduction SEWA is a “movement” of self-employed women and a largest National Trade Union in India, established by Ms. Ela R. Bhatt in 1972 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. SEWA is both an organization and a movement. SEWA works in 700 villages, 50 districts, 16 states of India. SEWA’s membership in Gujarat – 5,35,674 Members represent more than 125 different kind of trades. The SEWA approach is to address the needs of the worker as a laborer, as well as a woman.
SEWA Goals Self-Reliance - work individually and collectively to achieve economically independent and capable of making their own decisions. Full employment - work security, income security, food security and social security.
