system and its interaction with the circulatory, respiratory,
and excretory systems in providing the body with nutrients
for energy.
B. Performance

ELICIT
A. Reviewing
previous lessons
or presenting the
new lesson.

(5 minutes)

Since we are done with our topics in the third quarter, we can now proceed to
our first lesson for the fourth quarter.

Before I introduce to you our new topic, may I remind everyone to please
participate and if you have any questions or clarifications do not hesitate to ask.
I have here a picture to be shown to you.

Are you familiar with the picture?
Can you tell me what it is?

Very good! This picture shows the human digestive system.

What do you know about digestive system?

Some more idea?

Digestive system is the system of organs responsible for getting food into and
out of the body and for making use of food to keep the body healthy.

ENGAGE

B. Establishing a
purpose for the
lesson
(1 minute)
(Learning objectives will be presented to the learners.)
At the end of the session, you should be able to:
a. define Digestive System and its organs
b. describe the function of each organ; and
c. formulate healthful practices to avoid digestive diseases.
C. Presenting
examples/instanc
es of the new
lesson.

(4 minutes)
Before we start our discussion, I will provide 5 riddles that are related to our
topic, and let us see how far have you already learned about our digestive
system. Raise your hand if you want to answer the riddles.

1. It is white. Some are sharp some are not? Who am I?

2. I am in your tummy. I am pinkish, I look like a sack. Who am I?

3. I know if it’s sweet or salty, bitter or spicy. When I see good food my
bud bloom even I am not a flower. Who am I?

4. The junks that you eat and cannot digest are shown by me their way out.
Who am I?

5. I take care of the food you eat and send the nutrients into the blood.
Who am I?

Those are some of the organs involved in our digestive system. We will discuss
those one by one later. For now, we will have an activity entitled “Label Me”.
EXPLORE

D. Discussing new
concepts and
practicing new
skills #1

(5 minutes)
Activity 1: Label Me

In this activity, I will group you into three. This will be group 1, group 2, and
group 3. All you have to do is to label the main organs involved in the digestive
system. Use the word bank to help you complete the diagram. This activity has
allotted time of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, each group must have a
representative to present their work in front of the class.

E. Discussing new
concepts and
practicing new
skills #2

(10 minutes)
Post-activity Discussion

(The teacher will validate the answers of the students based on the content of
their report)

Please give yourselves 5 claps and 5 stamps.

Great! So now to strengthen our core of learning with our topic, I would like
you to listen attentively and cooperate with our discussion.

EXPLAIN
F. Developing
mastery (Leads to
formative
assessment 3)

(20 minutes)
Let us now get to know more about the human digestive system particularly its
organs.

The following are the organs involved in digestive tract:

Mouth
 Digestion starts here. Foods taken into body are chewed here in order to
be swallowed easily.
Physical digestion
 Teeth bites, chews and grinds food into something we can swallow.
Chemical digestion
 Salivary glands add saliva to begin the digestive process of
carbohydrates and fats.

(The teacher will explain further.)

Esophagus
 The esophagus serves to pass food and liquids from the mouth down to
the stomach. This is accomplished by periodic contractions
(peristalsis).

(The teacher will explain further.)

Stomach
 After food enters your stomach, the stomach muscles mix the food and
liquid with digestive juices. The stomach slowly empties its contents,
called chyme, into your small intestine.

(The teacher will explain further.)

Small intestine
 The muscles of the small intestine mix food with digestive juices from
the pancreas, liver, and intestine, and push the mixture forward for
further digestion. The walls of the small intestine absorb water and the
digested nutrients into your bloodstream. As peristalsis continues, the
waste products of the digestive process move into the large intestine.

(The teacher will explain further.)

Large intestine
 Waste products from the digestive process include undigested parts of
food, fluid, and older cells from the lining of your GI tract. The large
intestine absorbs water and changes the waste from liquid into stool.
Peristalsis helps move the stool into your rectum.

(The teacher will explain further.)

Rectum
 The lower end of your large intestine, the rectum, stores stool until it
pushes stool out of your anus during a bowel movement.

(The teacher will explain further.)

Anus
 The anus is the opening at the far end of the digestive tract through
which stool leaves the body. A muscular ring (anal sphincter) keeps the
anus closed until the person has a bowel movement.

(The teacher will explain further.)

ELABORATION

G. Finding practical
applications of
concepts and
skills in daily
living.

The teacher will ask the following questions to students related to the lesson.

Questions:
1. What should you do to have a healthy digestive system?
2. What are the practices that could damage your digestive system?
3. How will you take care of the organs of your digestive system?

(5 minutes)
H. Making
generalizations
and abstraction
about the lesson.

(5 minutes)
Let us have another activity for me to critically evaluate your understanding
with the topic.

This activity is called “Match Me”

Activity 2: Match Me!
Direction: Describe the function of each organ in the digestive system by
matching column A with column B. Write only the letter of the correct answer
on a ¼ sheet of paper. You have 5 minutes to answer the activity.

EVALUATION

I. Evaluating
learning.

(10 minutes)
To assess what you have learned, I have here another activity for you to answer
and this will be graded and recorded.

Activity 3: Wordy GUT!
Directions: Complete the crossword puzzle. Write your answer on a ¼ sheet of
paper. You will be given 10 minutes to answer.

EXTEND
J. Additional
activities for
application or
remediation.

(1 minute)
For your additional activity to be passed next week, make an infographic about
healthful practices to avoid digestive diseases.
Note: An infographic is a collection of images, diagrams, and text that provides
an easy-to-understand general idea of a topic. Most infographics use prominent
and attractive illustrations to converse the facts quickly and clearly. Please refer
to the rubric for scoring.
15 points Discussions and
illustrations are complete
with no misconception.
10 points Discussions and
illustrations are
incomplete with minor
misconception.
5 points There is no discussion
