What is a sentence? Feel Free to tell me!

At its most basic level…. A sentence must communicate an idea, a statement, or a question.

It can be really short or really long! I’m here. I’ll be home after I grab a few items, so be sure to complete your homework, get dressed, set the table, remind your brother to get ready, text your father what time the game starts, and lay your uniform out on the bed so that we will all be ready to get out the door on time.

A sentence MUST have two parts: A subject This is the who or the what .

It is a person, a place, or a thing! In other words…. A NOUN . My school

In addition to the Subject A sentence must have a Predicate

The predicate…. Tells what the subject does. It contains the verb (which is usually the action) .

So if the the subject is: My school i s just around the corner. The predicate could be: is being renovated. contains grades five through eight .

Identify the subject and predicate in each sentence. If it is missing either the subject or the predicate (or part of the predicate), say “ incomplete sentence” This is often called a sentence fragment.
