SERUM CHOLESTEROL
Lipids are fatty substances that form essential structural, component part of a cell. Foods rich in fats are
healthy energy sources, stored in the body in the form of triglycerides, phospholipids and cholesterol.
They form the cell membrane, store energy and act as biological molecules in building hormones and
generate bile acids to digest fatty food.
Cholesterol is a type of lipid produced by liver cells. Serum cholesterol levels marks the ratio of total
cholesterol in blood. When fats are consumed in definite standard proportions, they are easy to
metabolize, digest and absorb in the body. It reaches cells in the right amount for each of these cells and
tissues to carry on its normal physiological functions.
Serum cholesterol level is measured by calculating amount of high-density lipoprotein – HDL, low
density lipoprotein—LDL and triglycerides—or fat bundles in blood. A healthy normal human being has
total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dl, HDL –40 mg/dl or higher, LDL-- less than 100 mg/dl and
triglycerides below 150 mg/dl, in blood.
Cholesterol levels may rise in people who lead a sedentary life and lack physical activities, consume fatty
foods like dairy products, chocolates, deep fried or processed foods. People who are overweight have a
tendency to an increase in LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides. Smoking also affects the cholesterol
levels in blood lowering the amount of HDL which is considered as a good cholesterol. These are the risk
factors which are required to be controlled, checked, regulated by cultivating healthy balanced life style
and rigorous diet regime, to avoid diseases of heart, caused by elevated levels of serum cholesterol that
get deposited as plaques in coronary arteries, that supply blood to heart causing its damage which in
due course led to congestive cardiac failure.
Lipid profile or serum cholesterol levels can be checked as a routine laboratory investigation by drawing
blood from patient’s arm. The blood sample is sent for analysis in a laboratory. It is a test to understand
if a patient is under a risk of any heart disease. A normal serum cholesterol level through strict life style
modification, norms and regulations should be managed and controlled, to prevent heart diseases.
