Should We Prioritize Grammar over Speaking?
Your speaking partner!
Module #28

In learning English, which one do you think is more
essential, is it improving your grammar or improving
your spoken English?

Warming up!

Let’s watch a video related to buying or lease a car by clicking the following link:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wn_eBrIDUuc

Listening Script Test
According to the video, what is the definition of grammar?
What are the differences between sentence structure in English and
Japanese?
According to the video, there are two positions of language patterns in any
language. They are prescriptivism and descriptivism. How are they
different?
Based on the video, do writing and speaking have different purpose? Or are
they basically the same?
After watching the video, can I say that we cannot learn grammar
separately from speaking? They go hand in hand and we need a lifetime to
make a perfect combination of the two.

Phrase and Vocabulary
Vast (adj) : extremely big
Ex.: The vast majority of children attend state schools.
Realm (n) : an area of interest or activity
Ex.: Her interests are in the realm of practical politics.
Language purist (n) : a person who believes that it is important to speak, write, or do things in a correct or
traditional way
Ex.: A purist cares more about his good intentions than the consequences of his actions.
Propagate (v) : to spread opinions, lies, or beliefs among a lot of people
Ex.: The media have tried to propagate the belief that Covid-19 is a just a conspiracy.
Repertoire (n) : the complete list or supply of skills, devices, or ingredients used in a particular field, or practice
Ex.: Many students enter schools with a linguistic repertoire that straddles their languages.

Do you agree or disagree with the
following statements?
You have to know the structures and rules of the sentence first. If
you have known the structure of the sentences, you can speak
fluently and nicer.
It is more important to be good at speaking than writing, because
the ability to speak skillfully provides advantages such as ability to
inform, persuade, and direct people.
What is the point of knowing conversation skills if you can't speak
the language properly?
Learning grammar doesn't make you have a fluent communication,
unless you practice it.
Most people become not confident when they speak because they
think they don’t have a good grammar.

What is your view regarding this
statement?
Studying grammar is
more important than
practising conversation
skills.
*You may divide your class into 2 teams: affirmative and opposition. They take turn delivering their arguments.

What is your view regarding this
statement?
Unless a person is studying to become a
linguistics expert, it’s not important to
emphasize the grammar in our speaking as long
as the intended message conveyed to the
addressee.

*If you still have some time left, you may go on to discuss this topic.

Cheers up! :)
