Shah Jahan, also known as Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram, was the fifth Mughal Emperor of India who ruled from 1628 until 1658. He is remembered for his architectural legacy, which includes the construction of the Taj Mahal, one of the most iconic buildings in the world.

ShahJahanwasonlyabout14yearsoldwhensuddenlyabeautifulwoman
enteredhislifewhosenamewasArjumandBanuBegum,wholaterbecame
knownasMumtazMahal,andShahJahan,afterherdeath,builtsuchabuilding
inherlove,whichbecamefamousforeverworldwide.Onlyaftersometimedid

ShahjahanmarryArjumandBanuBegum(MumtazMahal).Butyes,Shah
JahandidnotforgethisSultanate’sresponsibilitiesbecausehelovedawoman
likehisfather,Jahangir.AlongwiththeloveofMumtazMahal,ShahJahanused
tofocusexcessivelyonalltheworksofhisSultanate,andthiswasthereason
thatafterthedeathofAkbarwhenthenextSultanoftheMughalSultanate
becameJahangir,i.e.,ShahJahan,JahangirmadehissonShahJahanthe
Sultanate.
Hewasgivenmanybigresponsibilities,whichShahJahanalsoperformedvery
wellaccordingtotheexpectationofhisfather,Jahangir.In1614,Jahangirsent
hissonShahJahantowardsMewarwithanarmyof12000sothathecould
conquerMewar.ShahJahanhadwonMewarwithanarmyof12000,provinghis
clevernessandbraverywithinafewdays.AlongwithconqueringMewar,healso
crushedtheconspiracieshappeninginmanyareasofIndiaagainsttheMughals.
ShahjahanRebelonJahangir
JahangirwasveryhappyabouthissonShahjahan’sclevernessandbravery,and
Jahangirdid.Askinghissongavehimanewnametohissonin1617,andthat
wasthename.ShahJahan,thenamebywhichhissonbecamefamousinthe
pagesofhistoryforever,butShahJahanseemedtohavegreatsuccess.Bythe
way,inthemindofShahjahan,thedesiretobecometheemperorwas
awakening.ButbecauseJahangir’smostbelovedandclosestwife,i.e.,Nur
Jahan,Jahan’ssecondson,whowasalsoherson-in-law,Shahryar,wantedto
makehimthenextSultanandJahangircouldnotdenyanythingtoNurJahan.
That’swhyShahJahanwasfacingthethreatthatafterJahangir,mybrother
ShaharyarwouldbecomethenextSultanoftheMughalSultanate.ShahJahan
suddenlyrebelledagainsthisfather,i.e.,Jahangir.ButthisrebellionofShah
Jahandidnotwork.Withinnotime,Jahangircompletelycrushedtherebellionof

hissonShahJahanandShahJahanwasbeginningtofeelthreatenedthatthe
ordertokillhimcouldbeissuedatanytime.That’swhyhestartedwriting
apologiestohisfather,i.e.,Jahangir.Healsorequestedforgivenessby
presentinghistwomostcapablesons,AurangzebandDaraShikoh,inthe
serviceofJahangir.JahangirforgaveShahjahanbytakingpityonShahjahan.
Shahjahanreturnedtohispalaceandstartedlivinganormallifeagain.

Jahangirdiedaftersometime.OnlyafterJahangir’sdeathdidthefightbecome
thenextSultanoftheMughalSultanateofthefoursonsofJahangir,two
daughterswerealreadyinvolvedinJahangir’slife,andnowthefightforthe
Sultanatewasleftbetweenthetwoofthefourbrothers.ShahJahanand
Shaharyar,butatthetimeofJahangir’sdeath,ShahJahanwasintheDeccan,
farawayfromLahore.That’swhyimmediatelyafterJahangir’sdeath,Shah
Jahan’sfather-in-law,AsifJahan,puthissisterNurJahanunderhousearrest
sothatshecouldnothelphisson-in-lawShaharyarandAsifJahanimmediately
sentthislettertoShahjahanthatheshouldgotowardsAgrawithspeed.Come,
AndheleftforLahorewithabigarmywhereShahJahan’ssecondbrother
Shaharyarhadalreadydeclaredhiskingdom.Shortlyafterdeclaringhiskingship,
ShahJahan’sfather-in-law,Asif,enteredLahorewithalargearmy.
TherewasafiercebattlebetweenShaharyar’sarmyandShahjahan’s
father-in-lawAsif’sarmy,andShaharyarwasdefeatedinthisbattle.Shaharyar
wasimmediatelytakenprisonerandsenttoAgra,andevenbeforeShahJahan
reached,ShahJahan’srulewasdeclaredthere.AndonFebruary14,1668,when
ShahJahanreachedAgra,hewasalsocrowned,andthusShahJahanbecame
thefifthemperoroftheMughalSultanate.Afterbecomingtheemperor,Shah
Jahanmarriedhisstepmother,i.e.,Jahangir’sdearestwife,NurJahan,who
herselfwasagainstShahJahanbecomingtheSultan.Fixedhisstipendof
20,00,000.ShahJahanruledfrom1628to1658.Andthisentireperiodpassed
withgreatpeaceandtranquilityforthepeoplelivinginIndia.Youmightbe
surprisedtoknowthatinMughalhistory,onlyduringthereignofShahJahan,the
MughalsareconsideredtheGoldenAge.
RebellionsduringthereignofShahJahan
Khan-i-JahanLodiRebellion

ImmediatelyafterShahJahan’scoronation,therewererebellions.AnAfghan
noblemannamedKhanJahanLodihadbeenthegovernorofGujaratandsome
stripsoflandinNorthernDeccan.Hehadsoldthislandtotherulersof
Ahmadnagarinreturnformoney.Itwastreason.HehadalsosupportedShah
Jahan’sbrotherShahryaragainsthim,soheobviouslyhadtogo.
ShahJahanmadeupagreatplantoarresthim.ShahJahanpromotedhim,and
theMughalprotocoldictatedthathenowhadtoappearbeforetheemperor.He
understoodwhatShahJahanwasuptoandfledwithhisfamilytoAhmadnagar.
WiththesupportoftheSultanthere,heinvadedMughalterritory.ShahJahanleft
thecapitaltofacehim.TheSultanofAhmadnagarfearedthatShahJahanmight
attackhimtopunishhimforsupportingtherebels,sohewithdrewhissupport.
KhanJahanLodiwascapturedandexecutedbyShahJahan.
BundelaRajputsofOrchha,JujharSingh’sRebellion
AnotherrebellioncamefromtheBundelaRajputsofOrchha.TheRajathere,
RajaJhujharSingh,hadmadesome…unexplainedgainsduringJahangir’stime
andShahJahanwantedanswersforthat.TheRajaescapedandaskedShah
Jahanforforgivenesswhichhegranted.However,theRajaoversteppedagain
whenhelaidsiegetoFortChauragarh,whichbelongedtoavassalofthe
Mughals.
ThesiegewentsobrutallythattheHinduRajaoftheforthadhiswomencommit
Jauharbeforehemadealaststandandfoughttothedeath.ShahJahanwas
livid.ShahJahansentanarmytobringJhujharSinghtojustice.Now,here
anotherthemeinIndianMuslimHistoryrepeats.JhujharSinghinheritedhistitle
afterhisfatherdied.Hisfather,RajaBirSingh,hadabitofashakyclaimtohis
title,whichhehadgainedafterassassinatingAkbar’sclosefriendAbu’lFazl
ontheordersofJahangir.

Jahangirgavehimthattitlewhenhebecameemperor.So,tolegitimizehimself,
hebuiltagrandtemple.ShahJahanorderedthedestructionofthistemple.Now,
rememberthattheconstructionanddestructionofthistempleweredoneas
politicalmoves,notforreligiousreasons,andthishashappenedthroughout
Indianhistory.EvenwhenHindukingsattackedeachother,templeswereoften
destroyedtode-legitimizetheotherone’sclaim.
ShahjahancapturedRajaJhujharSingh’stwosons,andtheyacceptedIslam;
thiswasonceagainapoliticalmove.NoneofwhatShahJahandidherewasan
attackonHinduism.Itwasallpolitical.Sincetheyweren’tHindus,theywere
somewhatoutcastsfromtheirRajputtribeandcouldn’tclaimtheirfather’stitles.
JhujharSinghhimselfwascapturedandkilledbythetribeoftheRajawhomhe
hadbesiegedpreviously.Withtheserebelstakencareof,ShahJahanmovedto
restructuretheempire.
1632BengalPolicy
In1632,heissuedpoliciestofixupBengal,whichhad,sofar,beenamating
groundofpiracyandslaveryconductedbyeveryone,includingthePortuguese.
HealsowantedtobringrenegadetribesintotheMughalfold.Forthispurpose,
heestablishedmilitarygarrisonsallovertheempireasthemetaphoricalstick
whileinstallingtriballeadersasMansabdaarswasthemetaphoricalcarrot.Shah
Jahansolidifiedtheempire’speripherywiththeseactsandbroughtitunderhis
control.Truly,theMughalEmpirewashittingitspeak.
ShahJahanisoftenimaginedasthemost…MughaloftheMughalEmperors.
EverythingweimaginewhenwehearMughalisusuallyassociatedwithhim.He
wasrichbeyondanyone’swildestimagination.Hisempirewassafeand
prosperous,sohedidwhateveryoneinhispositionusuallydid.Hestarted
creatingthephysicallegacyoftheempire.Hisfather,Jahangir,had
commissionedartandarchitecturalprojects,butShahJahantookittoanew

height.Evenbeforehebecameemperor,hehadcommissionedgardens,forts,
andmosqueseverywhere;now,Shahjahanwasbuildingthemupinthegrandest
wayshecouldimagine.
ArchitectureduringShahjahanRegion
ManybeautifulbuildingswerebuiltinIndiaduringthetimeofShahJahan.Beit
theTajMahalofAgra,theJamaMasjidofDelhi,ortheRedFortofDelhi,many
buildingslikethisarefamousworldwide.ItwasbuiltbyShahJahanonlyin
today’sera.TheareaofDelhi,knownasOldDelhi,wasalsobuiltbyShahjahan,
anditsoriginalandfirstnamewasalsoShahjahanabadbecauseShahjahan
builtit.
MumtazDeath
AneventinJune1631ledtohismostpopularcreation.HisbelovedwifeMumtaz
Mahaldiedgivingbirthtothecouple’sfourteenthchildinthenineteenthyearof
theirmarriage.There’sapopularjokethatShahJahanlovedhiswifesomuch
thatheneverlethergoonwithanemptybellyforlong.Hedidlovehervery
much.Accordingtoprimarysources,theemperorisolatedhimselfinaroomfor
overaweekandweptsomuchthathehadtowearglasses.Anothersourcesays
thatathirdofhisbeardandmustachebecamegrayalmostovernightwith
sorrow.HerbodywastakentoAgra,whereshewasburied.Ontopofhergrave,
ShahJahancommissionedandbuiltamonumenttodayconsideredan
everlastingsymbolofeternallove,theTajMahal.

Apartfromthis,Shahjahanalsobuiltathroneofhisown.Shahjahanusedto
sitonitonly.Onepeacockwasmadeonbothsidesofthisthrone,andadiamond
threadwaskeptineachbeak.Thespecialthingisthatallfourfeetofitwere
madeofgold,AnditisknownasTakhteTaus.ThoughtheentireperiodofShah
Jahan’sreignpassedwithgreatprosperity,ShahJahangotthebiggestshock.
Whenhismostbelovedwife,i.e.,MumtazMahal,passedawayjusttwoorthree
yearsafterhebecametheemperorbecauseShahJahanlovedMumtazMahal
verymuch.That’swhyhealwaysusedtocryafterherdeath.AfterMumtaz

Mahal’sdeath,ShahJahanalsostoppedwearingcolorfulclothes.Healways
worewhiteandsimpleclothes.
ShahJahanalsostoppedholdinghiscourtafterthedeathofMumtazMahal.Due
tocryingalotandalwayssorrowful,allthehairsonShahJahan’sheadand
beardstartedturningwhite.HehadhandedoveralltheworkofhisSultanateto
hisvizier,andhewasmostlybusybuildingbigbuildings.Butthesurprisingthing
isthewayShahjahanfoughtwithhisbrothertobecometheemperor,inthesame
waywhenhebecamebad,hisfoursonsalsofoughttobecometheemperor,and
hecouldseeeverythingwithhisowneyes.IwaswatchingsomethingButwas
notabletodoanything.

TajMahal
Thebeautifulbuildingyouareseeingrightnowisoneoftheworld’sseven
wonders,theTajMahal,locatedinIndiaandwasbuilt.EmperorShahabuddin
MohammedShahJahanoftheMughalSultanateofIndiadidnotonlybuild
theTajMahalinIndia.

Rather,innumerablebeautifulbuildingsliketheTajMahalhavebeenbuilt.80%
ofthebeautifulbuildingsinIndiaarelikethis.Thestringsofthosebuildingswill
befoundconnectedtoShahjahansomewhere;eithertheymusthavebeenbuilt
byShahjahan,ortheirbeautymusthavebeenenhanced.
ShahJahanwantedtoreplicateMumtazMahal’spalaceintheheavens.Itwas
completedinelevenyearsatthecostoftheTajMahal5millionrupees.To
understandhowmuchthatwas,theentirecityofOldDelhiorShahjahanabad,
whichShahJahanalsobuilt,costonlysixmillionrupees.So,theTajMahalcost
almostasmuchasanentireimperialcapitalcity.Also,in1646,theempire’s
yearlyexpenditurewasroughly225millionrupees.Youcangetanideaofhow
crazyrichthisempirewas.ShahJahanhimselfwasinvolvedinthedesign
process.
TheTajMahalitselfshowsShahjahanandwhathethoughtabouthimself.Babur,
theempire’sfounder,andShahJahan’sgreat-great-grandfatherwereburiedin
Kabul’sopensky.Humayun,hissuccessor,wasalsoburied,butlaterAkbarand
oneofhisstepmothersbuiltahugemausoleumoverhisgrave,andthiswas
donetoshowthattheempirewasstillprosperouseventhoughAkbarwasa
minorandrebellionswereeverywhere.Insimplewords,itwasapieceofpolitical
propaganda.AkbarandJahangirwereburiedinsimplegraveswithsmalltombs
laterconstructedoverthem.TheTajMahalreturnedtothestyleofHumayun’s
tombbutmuchgrander.ShahJahanconsideredhimselfspecial.
EarlymilitaryvictorieshadmadehimincrediblyarrogantasaMughalemperor.
Theangelbroughthimacrownandjewels,andaccessories.Hecalledhimself
Sahib-eKiran-eThani,whichmeansSecondLordoftheCombination,thebest
royaltitleever.
TheConjunctionreferstotheperiodconjunctionofSaturnandJupiter,anevent
consideredveryblessedinPersianAstrology.Peoplebornatthistimeexhibit

extraordinaryabilities.Ifyou’rewondering,theFirstLordoftheConjunctionwas
ShahJahan’sancestorTimurtheLame,althoughTimurnevercalledhimselfthat.
TherewereotherwaysShahJahanwantedtorelatetoTimur.Healsosentan
invasionforceintoCentralAsiain1646toconfronttheMughals’oldestrivals,the
Uzbeks,andtoconquerthelandsonceruledbyhisancestor,Timur.
ShahJahanremodeledthefortsatAgraandLahore,whichAkbarhadbuilt.He
madethemfithisideaofthemonarch.Forinstance,sinceAkbar,theemperors
hadheldaudiencesatanelevatedbalconycalledJharoka,literallyabovetheir
courtministersandvassals.ShahJahanincreasedtheheightoftheJharokaand
builtcolumnsinthecourttodistinguishthevariousranksofthevassals.
InAgra,hewentsofarastoorienttheJharokaaccordingtothemosqueatthe
court,sohisJharokastoodbetweentheprayingareaandtheKaabaatMecca,
whichMuslimsshouldfacewhilepraying.Multiplecontemporarysourcescallhim
theQiblaofhissubjects.Qiblaiswhereyoufacewhilepraying.Althoughhe
wasn’tsatisfiedwithjustfortsandtombs,ShahJahanplannedandbuiltanentire
citytohisdesire.

JamaMasjid
JamaMasjid,OldDelhi,India
JamaMasjidisOneoftheLargest&mostimportantmosquesinIndia,built
byShahJahanbetween1650and1656.JamaMasjidislocatedinOldDelhi,
India.JamaMasjidhastwonames,thefirst,whichShahJahangave,was
Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa,andlateritwascalledJamaMasjidamongthegeneral
public.JamaMasjidisabeautifulmosquemadeofwhitemarbleandred
sandstone.JamaMasjidhasthreebigdomesandtwominaretsmadeofwhite
marbleandblackslate.

RedFort(LalQuila),OldDelhi,India
TheRedFort,alsoknownasLalQuila,wasbuiltbytheMughalemperor
ShahJahaninthe17thcenturyandislocatedinOldDelhi.TheRedFortwas
namedafteritsredsandstonewalls.ItsmaingateisLahoreGate,infrontof
ChandniChowkmarket.ManyplacesareinsideRedFort,likeDiwan-e-Aam,
Diwan-e-Khas,RangMahal,andSalimgarhFort.
TheCityofShahjahanabad,OldDelhi

Shahjahanabad,orOldDelhi,wasbuiltbetween1639&1648.ShahJahan
connectedhisfamilytotheDelhiSultanatebybuildingthiscityinDelhi.Atthe
centerofthenewcitywastheRedFort,andattheheartoftheRedFortwasthe
PeacockThrone.Thisthronewassowonderfulinadisplayofluxuryandladen
withjewelsandpreciousstonesthatitcost10millionRupees.TwicewhattheTaj
Mahalcost.ThisdisplayofwealthandabsolutepoweriswhatEuropeanvisitors
broughtbackfromIndia,resultinginthecoinageoftheterm“mogul”fromthe
Mughals.
Allofthiswasbuiltonstabilityandprosperity,whichwentbacktoShahJahan
executinghisbrothers,nephews,andcousinswhenhebecameemperortoavoid

futurecivilwars.Butasluckwouldhaveit,whatgoesaroundcomes.Afterall,
ShahJahanhimselfhadtriedtooverthrowhisfather.In1657,ShahJahanfellill,
anditseemedlikehewoulddie.Hisfavoritetosucceedwashiseldest,Dara
Shikoh,buthisotherthreesons,allgovernorsofprominentregions,pickedup
theswordfortheirclaimtothepeacockthrone.
PrinceAurangzebgovernedtheDeccanregionofSouthIndia.PrinceShah
ShujagovernedBengalintheeast,andPrinceMuradBakhshgovernedGujarat
inthesouth.Theyraisedarmiestoattackthecapital,whichDaraShikoh
controlledinhissickfather’sname.Afteracivilwarofaroundayear,Aurangzeb
cameoutontopdespiteShahJahansupportingDaraShikoh,whowasmuch
lessdiplomaticandcapablethanAurangzeb.
ShahJahanandhisbeloveddaughterJahanaratriedtonegotiatewith
Aurangzeb,butduetohissupportofDaraShikoh,Aurangzebwasnotwillingto
listen.Duetohisvictoryovertheimperialarmy,Aurangzebheldallthecards.He
imprisonedtheoldemperorintheAgrafort,wherehelivedforthenexteight
years,beingabletoseebutnevervisittheTajMahal.

BattleofSamugarh
BattleofSamugarhBetweenDaraShikoh&AurangzebAlamgirin,May29,1658
ShahJahanhadfoursons,ofwhomthenameoftheeldestsonwasDara
Shikoh.ShahjahanusedtoloveDaraShikohthemost,andthenextSultanafter
himalsowantedtomakeDaraShikohonly,butthereasonwasthatallthe
peoplelivinginthecourtwereagainstDaraShikoh.Becausethereligiousideas
ofDaraShikohwereverywrong,hedidnotbelieveinanyreligion.Everything
wasequalinhiseyes.ThatiswhyallthepeoplelivinginShahJahan’scourtdid
notwantDaraShikohtobecomethenextSultanoftheMughalSultanate.Allthe
courtpeoplehadstartedmeetingAurangzebAlamgirinternallysothatwecould

makeAurangzebAlamgirournextSultanbecauseDaraShikohusedtostay
withShahJahaninDelhi.Theremainingthreebrothersusedtoliveindifferent
places.
AurangzebAlamgirwasinDeccan,somewereinBengal,andsomewerein
otherareas.In1657,whenShahjahansuddenlybecameillandcouldnothold
hiscourt,AurangzebAlamgiraccusedDaraShikohofhidingtheillnessofour
fatherShahjahanbecauseofgainingpower,butDaraShikohrejectedthis
charge.Declaredfalse.AlongwithAurangzebAlamgir,mostofthecourtiers
livingintheDelhicourtalsobelievedthatDaraShikohwashidinghisfather’s
illnesstogainpower.Forthisreason,AurangzebAlamgir,oneofhisfour
brothersnamedMurad.Takingalargearmywithhim,Darasetoutagainst
Shikoh.
TherewasafiercebattlebetweenDaraShikohandAurangzeb’sarmy,and
DaraShikohwasdefeatedinthiswarwiththedefeat,AurangzebAlamgir
wasmadethenextSultan.Afterthat,anothersonofShahJahannamedShah
ShujaalsorebelledagainstAurangzebAlamgir,butAurangzebAlamgirwas
toostrongforhim,duetowhichgraduallywithgreatbraveryandintelligenceas
wellasthereasonforthesupportofthepeople.Nowthewaywasalmostcleared
forAurangzebAlamgirtobecometheemperor,andthesickShahjahanwas
watchingallhissonstakeupswordsagainsteachotherfromthefortofLahore
andwasgettingmoreandmoresickdaybyday.
ShahJahanDeath
Afterbecomingtheemperor,AurangzebAlamgirhadgivenmanyservantsinthe
palaceofAgratoservehisoldfather,Shahjahan.Allthoseservantsusedtotreat
Shahjahaninthesamewayasisdonewithanemperor.Alongwiththose
