Fossil fuels for Co

Slide Content

EARTH SCIENCE STEM - 11

PRIMING ACTIVITY: “Match me” Match the words according to their descriptions

MATCH ME! __1. Ore minerals __2. Mining __3. Mineral processing __4. Gangue __5. Flotation A.Unwanted rock mixed with ore mineral B. Extraction of mineral resources C. Non-renewable resource D. Separation of ore if it is hydrophobic or hydrophillic E. Removal of unwanted rocks from ore bodies

Lesson objectives : a. Describe how fossil fuels are formed b. Differentiate the 3 types of fossil fuels c. Give the importance of fossil fuels

What’s in? You will be given 2 sets of images. 1st set- Arrange it from the most recent date upto the oldest date so that the 1st word will be revealed 2nd set- “4 pics in a word” guess what the pictures depict.

FOSSIL + FUELS

What do we mean by Fossil?

FOSSIL - latin word “fossilis” which means “obtained by digging” -preserved remains of plants and animals

How about Fuels?

FUELS - materials that are burnt to produce energy -substances that is used to provide heat or power

What is a fossil fuel?

FOSSIL FUELS Non-renewable energy source from the remains of plants and animals. Fossil fuels are made from decomposing plants and animals. Retrieved from the ground and offshore areas converted into suitable forms to produce energy.

Question: How do you normally go to school? Are you commuting? riding a motorcycle, tricycle, jeepney or bus? What are you means of transportation?

Follow up Question: Among your answers, which is the most common or traditional mode of transportation? What do you think is a common source of energy of this kind of transportation?

fuels gas petroleum

Fossil fuels provides almost 90 % of the worlds energy supply. they are the worlds primary energy source that provide most of the energy support in transportation , electricity and industries . they are natural but are limited sources that are very abundant and has a cheaper cost of production

Why do you think that fossil fuels are only limited?

Reasons: because they are non-renewable source of energy they take millions of years to form we use them quickly than nature makes them

Where does the energy in the fossil fuels originally came from?

The SUN

How?

Concept-recall : Photosynthesis Food webs

Keep in mind! Plants trap energy that comes from the sun and use the energy to make their own food.

Keep in mind! Some energy remains in plants and animals that die and become fossil fuels

What are the 3 major types of fossil fuels?

3 major types of fossil fuels COAL OIL NATURAL GAS

HOW FOSSIL FUELS ARE FORMED?

Generally, Formed when organic matter that has buried deep within the earth are subject to HEAT and PRESSURE over millions of years. They were buried by thousands of feet of sand and sediments.

ACTIVITY TIME!

“ FOSSIL FUEL PIZZA ” Complete the pizza card by writing a description for each fossil fuel. OIL COAL NATURAL GAS

What are some examples of Fossil Fuels

FOSSIL FUEL PIZZA COAL:  Made from dead plants  solid  Includes hard black rocks and soft brown dirt  found in sedimentary rock deposits OIL OR PETROLEUM:  originally found as a solid material between layers of sedimentary rock, like shale.  heated to produce the thick oil that can be used to make gasoline NATURAL GAS:  is usually found in pockets above oil deposits  can also be found in sedimentary rock layers that don’t contain oil  is primarily made up of methane CH 4

Groups 1-3 -Complete the Storyboard for the formation of the 3 major type of Fossil fuels: COAL, OIL, NATURAL GAS 4. Cite Advantages of using Fossil fuels 5. Cite Disadvantages of burning Fossil fuels (atleast 3) Energy Explorer Group Task:

Assign: Leaders Assistant leader Secretary Material keeper -Present to the class after 3 mins

Types of Fossil fuels

Types of Fossil fuels COAL OIL or PETROLEUM NATURAL GAS

Types of Fossil fuels COAL

Coal contains energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in swampy forests .

What is a Natural gas?

Natural gas is usually found in pockets above oil deposits. Natural gas is primarily made up of M ethane (National geographic, 2019).

What is O il or P etroleum ?

How is O il or petroleum formed ? Petroleum is formed when large quantities of dead organisms, mostly zooplankton and Algae are buried underneath sedimentary rocks and subjected to both heat and pressure.

What are other petroleum products?

USES OF OIL/ PETROLEUM

ADVANTAGES OF BURNING FOSSIL FUELS

S HARE YOUR THOUGHTS! Knowing the processes how fossil fuels were formed and their uses, as a student, how important are fossil fuels in the development of our economy in the Philippines?

DID YOU KNOW? We have a fossil fuel reservoir in the Philippines. The Malampaya Powerplant is situated at the island of Palawan which produce cleaner-burning natural gas which supplies 40% of Luzons energy requirement.

Let’s sum it up!

FOSSIL FUELS USES CHARACTERISTICS COAL OIL OR PETROLEUM NATURAL GAS FUELLED UP!

ASSESSMENT TIME!

I. EVALUATION Direction: For nos.1-5 Determine if the statement is True or False: 1. Fossil fuels take a long time, even millions of years, to develop
2. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy
3. Methane, a highly inflammable substance is the main component of petroleum.
4. Natural gas has a distinctive smell of its own that is used to detect it in case of leakage.
5. Fossil fuels get their energy from the wind.

*For nos. 6-10 Choose from the given options -Fossil fuels, Coal, Oil, Petroleum, Natural gas 6. An odorless, colorless hydrocarbon gas that is composed mainly of methane (CH4)
7. A black sedimentary rock form of fossil fuel made of carbon content material.
8. What major type of fossil fuel is a liquid and made mostly of hydrocarbons?
9. A liquid fossil fuel composed of hydrocarbons, also called as crude oil that can be refined to form fuel
10. Energy resources that came from the buried, fossilized remains of living organisms like animals and plants that lived millions of years ago

ASSIGNMENT: Search on Fossil fuel deposits that can be found in the Philippines. Determine the location, abundance & types. Write it on your notebook.
