Cables and connectors Types of Cables Twisted Pair Cables : Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) : Commonly used in Ethernet networks (e.g., Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7). Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) : Includes shielding to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).
UTP VS STP
Coaxial Cable Coaxial Cables : Used in cable television networks, broadband internet, and some older Ethernet networks. Consists of a central conductor, insulating layer, metallic shield, and outer insulating layer.
Fiber Optic Cables Fiber Optic Cables : Uses light to transmit data, providing high speed and long-distance transmission. Single-mode fiber : Long-distance communication. Multi-mode fiber : Shorter distances, commonly used within buildings.
Types of Connectors Types of Connectors RJ45 Connector : Commonly used with twisted pair cables in Ethernet networks. Connects to devices such as computers, routers, and switches.
BNC Connector Used with coaxial cables.Common in older Ethernet networks and for video connections.
SC, ST, and LC Connectors : Used with fiber optic cables. SC (Subscriber Connector) : Snap-in connector, commonly used in datacom and telecom applications. ST (Straight Tip) : Bayonet-style connector, often used in network environments. LC (Lucent Connector) : Smaller form factor, popular in data centers and high-density applications.
Applications Ethernet Networks : Typically use UTP cables with RJ45 connectors. Fiber optic cables may be used for backbone connections. Telecommunications : Fiber optic cables provide high-speed communication over long distances. Cable Television and Broadband : Coaxial cables are standard for connecting homes to the service provider’s network.
