S ynonyms: Saal, sakhwa, sal tree, jin, agrs, dhusin.
Biological source: It is the oleo-resin obtained from bark, leaves, fruits and seed oils of shorea robusta gearth belonging to family Dipterocarpaceae.
Geographical source: It is widely distributed in Nepal, I ndia and B hutan. It is distributed throughout Nepal to about 1400 m in open sub- H imalayan tracts and outer region of the hills.
Cultivation and collection: It is propagated by seedling methods. It is light demander. It grows on wide range of soil type except in the very sandy, gravelly soils.
Preparation: The plant oleo-resin was shed dried and successfully extracted with different solvents using soxhlet apparatus. The extracts were filtrate and concentrated under reduced pressure below 40°c to dryness.
Macroscopic characters: Tall, gregarious tree of about 30 m height forming dominant forests. Leaves 6-22 × 4-16 cm, alternate, petiolate, ovate, oblong, entire, glabrous. Flowers in axillary or terminal panicles, cream coloured. Fruits samara wings, brownish yellow.
Uses : The resins is valued for dysentery, gonorrhea, diarrhea, boils and toothaches. A warm leaf is applied to swollen part of the body for its quick effects. Seed oil is applied in case of skin disease, illumination. Bark and leaves are astringent, acrid, antihelmenthic, bacterial infections, anemia etc.
