What makes someone happy is learned in the two tales, written by Hans Christian Andersen, The
Daisy, and The Old Oak Tree s Last Dream. While in today s society, many people believe it is
popularity, wealth, and material items that make you happy, Andersen expresses that it is, as a
matter of fact, the simple joys in life that are a necessity for satisfaction. In these tales, the
protagonists, the daisy and the tree, are the ones that are truly blissful, as they underestimate the
luxury of life, and overestimate the simplicity of all life has to offer. The main character in The

While the daisy is alone by a ditch, and outside of the fence, that is its preferred method of living
(Brown). Being outside the fence means it is outside of the garden, outside of the follower,
cowardly, conspicuous way of living the tulips and the roses lead. The tulips and roses are
domesticated; they are trapped behind the ridges of the picket fence. On the contrary, the daisy
belongs to nature, and is happy and thriving because of it. Displaying its happiness and simplicity,
the daisy feels the warmth of the sun and discovered, how pleasant life can be, (108). The
freedom it has is a direct cause of the contentment it holds. It is part of the daisy s nature to be
happy and open to new things (Brown). The daisy shows pleasure in the sharing of goods, for
instance when the sun shone as pleasantly on the little wild flower as it did on the richly
colorful, cultivated flowers in the garden (108). The sun shines on the flowers equally, whether
wild or domestic, and the daisy feels no resentment or pain; it enjoys the sun even if it has to
