What is special about them?
Modal verbs behave very
differently from normal verbs.
Here are some important differences:
ולא םילעפ"םיגהנתמ "םירחא םילעפמ הנוש ןפואב .
םיבושח םילדבה רפסמ וגצוי ךשמהב:

How?
1.Modal verbsare always followed by a verb in
its base form.
EXAMPLES:
He canspeakChinese.
Compare: I speak Chinese.
He speaksChinese
You maytakethe book to school.
She maytakethe book to school.
Compare: You takethe books to school.
She takes the books to school.
הלא םילעפ רחאל ,ולש רוקמה תרוצב לעופ דימת עיפוי.

2. Modal verbsdo not take "-s" in the third
person in the present simple.
EXAMPLES:
•He speaksChinese.
•He canspeakChinese. (NOT-He cans speak…)
•She eatsa sandwich at 9:30
•She mayeat a sandwich at 9:30.
הלא םילעפ רחאל ,ולש רוקמה תרוצב לעופ דימת עיפוי.
םהינשל , ףסוותת אלS דיחי ישילש ףוגב.
How?

3. You use "not" to make modal verbs
negative, even in Simple Present and
Simple Past.
(We don’t use the helping verb “do”)
EXAMPLES:
He should notbelate.
They might notcometo the party.
Compare: I don’t like to be late.
I cannoteatany more cakes.
I don’t eatcarrot cakes.
הלא םילעפ לש הלילשה תרוצ תא רוציל ידכ ,
ב שמתשנ- not רזעה לעופ אללdo.
How?

4. Many modal verbs cannot be used in the
past tenses or the future tenses.
EXAMPLES:
He willcango with us.WRONG
She muststudiedvery hard. WRONG
הלאה םילעפה בורב ,דיתעב וא רבעב שמתשהל ןתינ אל.
How?

•Many modal verbs cannot be used
in all of the English tenses. That's
why we need to know their
meaning and the substitute for
these modal verbs.
