To learn to recognise and
use different types of
literary language.

WHY?
•Literary Language not only give vivid
descriptions,
•But also to express ideas in new,
imaginative ways.
•Often used to express complex ideas,
•Make a meaning fresher and
•Capture a physical or sensory effect.
TB Pg.159

Similes and MetaphorsSimiles and Metaphors

Similes and MetaphorsSimiles and Metaphors

and I've been working like a dog

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players
They have their exits and their entrances
William Shakespeare

Simile (TB Pg. 159)
•To make a direct comparison between two
dissimilar things.
•Points out a similarity between the two
and allows us to understand the first thing
better.
•Often identified with the presence of a
connecting verb eg. ‘like’ or ‘as’
•Forrest Gump: My momma always said,
"Life was like a box of chocolates. You
never know what you're gonna get."
Refer to TB pg 160 Willow and Ginkgo

Metaphor (TB Pg. 161)
•Describes something by referring to it as
something else.
•Points out similarities between two
dissimilar things.
•Unlike similes, do not use connecting verb
eg. ‘like’ or ‘as’.
•The shop was a little gold-mine
Refer to TB pg 161 Super Duper

Firework
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGJuMBdaqIw)
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?
Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you?
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July
'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down
You don't have to feel like a waste of space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe you're reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it's time, you'll know
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July
'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through
'Cause baby you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

PERSONification
Uses a non-human
subject and gives it
human characteristics.

Some examples…
• Don’t let this chance walk out of the door!
• My mobile phone seems to be throwing a
fit. I cannot switch it on at all!
• I watched love pass me by…
• The lovely pair of shoes is calling out to me
to become its owner.

Why is it useful to use
PERSONification in
writing?
We identify more closely
with an object or idea
when it is endowed with
human characteristics,
making it useful for
expressing thoughts and
feelings
