Simple present Use for explain hobby, routine, fact, and also give instruction . Use to be ( is, am, are ) There are two kinds of sentences in simple present tense : Verbal sentence (S+V1+O) Example : (+) I have a dream (+) He does not like apple (-) I do not have a dream (-) He does not like chocolate (?) Do I have a dream? (?) Does he like chocolate?
Nominal sentences ( S+be+complement ) Example : (+) You are tall (+) She is a florist (-) You are not tall (-) She is not a florist (?) Are you tall? (?) Is she a florist
SIMPLE PAST Use for show activity in the past Use V2 and Did (for interrogative sentence) There are two kinds of sentences in simple past tense Verbal sentence (S+V2+O) Example : (+) They ate fried rice (+) We lived in Surabaya (-) They did not eat fried rice (-) We did not live in Surabaya (?) Did they eat fried rice? (?) Did we live in Surabaya?
Nominal sentences ( S+be+complement ) (+) Lily was a teacher (+) Moza and Robert were angry (-) Lily was not a teacher (-) Moza and Robert were not angry (?) Was Lily a teacher? (?) Were Moza and Robert angry ? (If there are “did” in the sentence , the verb is move to V1)
