Theory of Syrup : Syrups are highly concentrated viscous aqueous solution in sugar in purified water. Syrups may be medicated or non medicated. Simple syrup consists of 66.7 % w/w of sucrose as per Indian Pharmacopoeia. If syrup contains same therapeutic agents it is called as medicated syrup. If it do not contain therapeutic agents and only contains flavouring agents and used as vehichles is called flavored syrup. eg. cherry syrup , orange syrup , coca syrup. Syrups are good demulcent and soothing agents, hence they are of special value in cough syrups of sucrose in sugar based syrup is very important. Advantage of Syrup . As sweetening agent , syrup can mask unpleasant taste of medicine. Syrups are concentrated, when it is taken by oral route, there is a feeling of soothing effects due to high viscosity in mouth and on irritated tissue of throat. Due to its taste and fluidity, syrup is given to small children and old aged patient that they can swallow this.

Dose : 15 to 20 ml. Category : Pharmaceutical Aid . (Non-Medicated syrups ) Storage : Store in airtight container in cool temperature not exceeding 25 degree centrigrade. (constant temperature can be prevent Crystallization of sugar in syrup )
