Talking about the present simple present tense: - base form of the verb - add “s” for she, he, it He is hungry. They like pizza. She knows a lot of people. Leaves fall off the trees in autumn. 5

Talking about the present present progressive tense: - form of “be” verb (am, are, is) + ing What are you doing now? The teacher is talking at the moment. 8

Present Tenses There are 2 ways (2 verb tenses) to talk about the present in English: Simple present Present progressive (or present continuous) 9

Simple Present – Uses With non action verbs (verbs with no movement): a) state : be, seem, appear, exist b) possession : have, own, possess c) feelings & needs : like, love, hate, feel, want, need, wish d) thought : thin k, believe, know, imagine, understand e) the senses : see, hear, taste, smell **Non action verbs don’t make the present progressive 10

Simple Present: Uses With non action verbs (verbs with no movement): state : be, seem, appear, exist I am in my office. He seems happy today. Those tourists appear (to be) lost. 11

Simple Present - Uses With non action verbs (verbs with no movement): b) possession : have, own, possess I have $20.00 in my wallet. He owns a new car. 12

Simple Present - Uses With non action verbs (verbs with no movement): c) feelings & needs : like, love, hate, feel, want, need, wish I hate winter in Canada. He likes hamburgers. They want ice cream. 13

Simple Present - Uses With non action verbs (verbs with no movement): d) thought : thin k, believe, know, imagine, understand I think fall is the best season. He believes in Santa Claus. They understand Portugese . 14

Simple Present - Uses With non action verbs (verbs with no movement): e) the senses : see, hear, taste, smell I see you. He hears sirens outside. Those cookies smell delicious. 15

Simple Present - Uses 2. For facts and true statements: It snows here in the winter. Water boils at 1 00 degrees celsius . Plants grow in the spring and summer months. 16

Simple Present - Uses 3. For schedules and things that happen regularly . The # 10 bus leaves at 12:15 pm. Classes begin next week. The post office opens at 9:00 am. I play pickle ball every Saturday. 17

Simple Present Non action verbs: CORRECT: My sister wants a new car. INCORRECT: My sister is wanting a new car. 18

Simple Present Non action verbs: CORRECT: I am a student. INCORRECT: I am being a student. 19

Present Progressive - Uses For present ongoing actions: The students are reading at the moment. It is raining outside. Are you listening to me? 22

Present Progressive - Uses 2. To talk about future planned events or intentions: Sam is leaving in the morning. After lunch, I am going shopping. 23

Time Markers – SIMPLE PRESENT TIP: When you see these time markers , use simple present : Every (week, day, year) Once, twice (a day, a month) Adverbs of frequency (always, usually, never, sometimes) 24
