Simulation and Its Application

What is Simulation? An attempt to duplicate the features, appearance, and characteristics of a real system To imitate a real-world situation mathematically To study its properties and operating characteristics A simulator is a device that may use any combination of sound, sight, motion and smell to make you feel that you are experiencing an actual situation.

How is simulation done? Problem Formulation Setting of Objectives and Overall Project Plan Model Conceptualization Data Collection Model Translation Verification Validation Experimental Design Production Run and Analysis Documentation and Report Implementation

Problem Formulation Setting of Objectives and Overall Project Plan Model Conceptualization Data Collection Model Translation Experimental Design Production Run & Analysis More Runs? Validated? Verified? Documentation & Reporting Implementation No Yes Yes No Yes Yes No No

Flexibility to model things as they are (even if messy and complicated) Estimated that 75% of computing power is used for various kinds of simulations Real-world complications can be made easy “Time compression” is possible Allows “what-if” types of questions Statistical design& analysis capabilities Does not interfere with real-world systems Can study the interactive effects of individual components or variables in order to determine which ones are important in a system Advantages of Simulation
