Sejak tahun 1950 ILO, (International L abour Organization) d an WHO (World Health Organization) telah menetapkan definisi umum dari kesehatan kerja , yaitu : Kesehatan kerja harus mencapai peningkatan dan perawatan paling tinggi di bidang fisik , sosial sebagai seorang pekerja di bidang pekerjaan apapun ; pencegahan bagi setiap pekerja atas pengurangan kesehatan karena kondisi kerja mereka , perlindungan bagi pekerja untuk mengurangi faktor yang dapat merugikan kesehatan mereka ; penempatan dan perawatan bagi pekerja di lingkungan kerja sesuai dengan kemampuan fisik dan psikologi dari pekerja , dan meringkas adaptasi dari setiap pekerja ke pekerjaanya masing-masing . 7. OSH ( Occupational Safety and Health Act). Ditandatangani oleh Richard M. Nixon pada tanggal 29 Desember 1970 . Undang -undang ini menjadi pencetus berdirinya badan NIOSH ( National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) dan (OSHA) Occupational Safety and Health Administration). Isi dari OSHA itu terdiri dari beberapa point, antara lain: Mendorong para pemilik dan pekerja perusahaan agar berusaha untuk mengurangi tingkat resiko di lingkungan kerja dan menstimulasi pengusaha dan pekerja untuk menyempurnakan program yang mendukung keselamatan dan kesehatan pekerja yang sudah ada .
